The is a foul odor outside of the boat immediately after flushing the toilet. What is the cause ? Does something need inspected and repaired ?

There’s dozens of postings in several threads on this subject Rosemary. Recommendations for all sorts of additives and filters, purchased or home made. The essentials come down to using fresh water instead of salt for flushing (your shower head is just a stretch away), fitting a filter (I like the Big Orange filter with built in relief valve and lots of medium) and a good additive that works for you. It’s quite natural, unfortunately.

Sounds like you may have a fart stuck in your vent system somewhere, I would recommend a lubricant such as Hormel Chile, or Nalley's with beens! I hope this helps eliminate the odor problem but if not I would recommend more fiber in your diet. Bob

Hormell and Nalleys could well be the root problem of the foul air......but Chimo outlined most of the fixes discussed in thousands of posts on multiple forums. A search of this forum will provide hours of possible solutions. Best fixes on my end are fresh water flushes....a simple vent filter....and double tank flushes at pump out.....good luck your fix.

+1 to Chimo and would add the importance of regular pump out (don't let it sit more than a week, if possible) and adding 1-2 extra rinses when possible (if there's no one waiting for pump out, fill it up halfway or so with water after pumping, pump out again, and repeat).

My routine now:
1. fresh water from the head sink hose extension,
2. double flush,
3. Big Orange filter installed and charcoal refreshed seasonally,
4. don't let tank sit more than 2 weeks without a pumpout (I'll fill with fresh water first if the level is low),
5. RV Waste treatment added after every pump out with 2 gallons of fresh water,
6. once or twice a season do 3-4 repeated flushes of vinegar and let sit before next use,
7. use other facilities whenever possible and convenient.

Could be a an extra spicy Bloody Mary percolating in the waste tank causing the odor

It has been brought to my attention that I do not have a waste tank filter. The extra vent on the starboard side of my R23 with the black cap on it is actually a fuel tank vent filter. I want to install a waste tank filter but I might need to pull the refrigerator out to install one.

Here is my concern:

If i use the head to poop (everybody does now and then) and wipe, what do i do next?
Option #1, pump the handle to fill the bowl more, then flip the switch and pump out to waste tank? (which hand?)

Option #2, wash hands and then perform #1? Then do I wash again?

Stay with me....Here it comes***

When I pump the load into the wast tank, it causes the tank to push air out of the vent to allow the load in.

Now I wash my hands and the water pump sucks water out of the fresh water tank. When it does, it draws air into the fresh water tank through the vent. That air sits in the tank and for how long? I don't know. Do I drink the water or use to make coffee? Maybe, maybe not.

Take a look at your boat or manual that shows where most of your vents are located. I found my waste tank vent is right next to my fresh water tank vent on the outside of the boat and that is why I plan to install a waste tank vent charcoal filter. Does this make sense to anyone else? If not, just respond Shut up please.

Wow. This is one of those equations in life where I have never connected the dots. I changed my head to a fresh water flush and added the Dometic eco tank filter. The pushing of the flush button now does what you described on demand simultaneously. The fresh water conversion and tank filter eliminated any odor we had with raw water and no filter. We don’t drink the onboard water, but we shower and brush our teeth with it, just as bad with the thought of cross contamination. I am horrified at your observation, I might have to take this information to my grave. If the wife spends any time contemplating the dynamics of air exchanges in the tanks that might be it for this boat.

The poop is getting deep! I think I need another drink to think about this. Reminded me of two young service members having a drink at a local bar, one a sailor and the other a marine, they went to the head to relieve themselves, afterwards as they were walking out the marine told the sailor that he was taught to wash his hands after using the restroom, at which time the sailor said in the navy they were taught to not piss on there hands!

Luckily on our C30 the freshwater vent and the waste vent are on different sides of the boat.

Still -- with the caveat that I have zero expertise here, just an opinion -- I would not worry too much about cross-contamination via one vent into the other vent. Presumably what comes out of the waste vent is primarily hydrogen sulfide gas, and although it smells bad would not be a contaminant in itself. If there happen to be particles, they would be unlikely to make their way out, and then further to be carried to the other vent, and then to make their way down into the tank, and then finally to overcome any residual chlorine on the water.

Also, are you sure you have freshwater head? That is not the default on most models AFAIK. (We added it -- and like it.)

Now, I do worry about the air spray from toilets on commercial planes ...
