We have the Yanmar 150 hp diesel engine in our R25.

Our Garmin 5120 and the Yanmar display unit both provide oil status gauges and readouts.

I've noticed that the oil gauge on the Garmin 5120 shows the needle to be in the red area (needle hard over to left) whereas the Yanmar display gauges and readouts show there's no issue with oil pressure or temperature.

When I first observed this I became concerned but ended up believing the Yanmar oil displays and readout.

Do others observe this ? Thanks.... 🙂

I am guessing that the Garmin is not connected to the oil pressure and oil temperature sending units on the Yanmar. If the Garmin is connected then there may be a short in the wiring between the sending units and the Garmin.

Was this Garmin installed recently or was it factory installed? If the factory installed it then you may want to check with Andrew Custis to see if they connect the wiring to provide the readouts on the Garmin. As it would be redundant (sometimes redundancy is a good thing) they may not. If you had someone install this unit for you recently they may have neglected to connect the wiring.

Thanks... 🙂

The Garmin 5120 was installed by Ranger factory as part of my new boat purchase. I will contact Andrew about this as I like the idea of having redundancy. 🙂

This does not work with the Yanmar. Yanmar does not tie in the oil readouts off of the engine to NMEA 2000 and thats why you cant read it. There is no fix for this unfortunately. Should be fine to read it off of the Yanmar gauge though.

Thanks Andrew - that has eased my mind greatly. However, I sure wish that Yanmar display unit was easier to read. I find I have to bend down quite a bit to see the readings. I wonder if there's a setting that would improve this aspect ?

I guess they can't be good at everything. I agree that the display is not the greatest. At least we can tie it into the Garmin to view most of the instruments!
