I just bought a new BMW M2 for my mid-life crisis car(not big into Corvettes). I'm getting ready to do an oil change and I've been doing research on oil types and brands. I need to use BMW LL-01 only and it's hard to find and expensive! This got me thinking about the oil I'm using in Gratitude. On the BMW blog I learned that Mobil1 is no longer an approved oil for most BMWs. I just looked in my Yanmar 4BY2-180 manual and it's very clear to use BMW LL-01 or BMW LL-04 oil only. I know this will open up a can of worms but I'd like to know what brands others are using if we can't use Mobil 1 anymore. From what i understand BMW approved oils are refined from natural gas.

I use Pennzoil Ultra Euro 5w-40.....I think they changed the name to Pennzoil Ultra Platinum.

Tim,

You may be mistaken. My manual indicates that I can use Mobil-1 and Rotrella T-6. The important thing is that it meet the following specs:Engine Oil Specifications Use a full-synthetic long-life engine oil that meets or exceeds the following guidelines and classifications: Service Categories • API Service Categories SM, SL, SJ, SH/ CF and CF • ACEA Service Categories A3, B3

Hello Tim

Congratulations on your new M2.

Does it have a Diesel engine?

Just a quick update on the BMW spec oil. Mobil 1 did stop making oil with the LL-01 and LL-04 spec for a while but the are now making it again. It's Mobil 1 ESP for diesels engines and BMW LL-04 requirments. For my last oil change I bought the same oil that PhilR uses, Pennzoil Platinum and Dave I hope not because I just filled the tank with 93 octane!

I've used Shell Rotella for years in 3 trucks with the Cumins Diesel. In my boat with the Yanmar 6BY, my BMW Z3 with the 2.8 and my BMW R1200RT I use the Rotella T6. No issues and I change oil religiously.

Buy your oil from Walmart, cheapest I've found. Manufacturer oil is a scam and over priced.

My two cents (saved) worth.
