I have a 2014 31 ft Ranger Tug. It has an Onan Generator. We are at anchor on the Mississippi River and all of a sudden my generator shut down. I looked at the diagnosing flashing lights and it is indicating a blockage in the raw water flow. How do I clear this blockage? Thank you

How do you clean the raw water intake on a2014 Onan generator in a 31 ft Ranger Tug?

take the strainer cover off and pay particular attention to the inlet. I have found that sea grass blades slip in and block the water flow before it gets to the strainer.

If you turn off the sea cock and remove the strainer then turn the sea cock back on water should run out . If no water then the sea cock to strainer is plugged. If this is good and the screen in the strainer is clear reassemble and follow the hose to where it attaches to generator . Remove the hose at the generator and hold it down low and see if water runs out of the hose when the sea cock is open. If you have water there then it is the impeller. The impeller needs to have water all the time . If you have had the boat out of the water and left the seacock open sometimes you can get an air lock in the hose and the impeller will go. When you remove the impeller you will see some of the veins will be missing . You need to find all the pieces before you install the new one. Everyone should keep a spare aboard as these tend to go over time. The impeller change takes about an hour. Make sure you put a bit of grease on the impeller as it will run dry for a few secs until it pulls water in after the change.
Good luck

In addition, once you solved this problem, make it a practice to check your sea strainers (engine, generator and air/heater) for cleanness on a regular basis....especially when cruising in waters new to you.

Where is the seacock and strainer on the 31Ranger Tug? Much thanks. bill

I'm not exactly sure on the R31 but if it is like the R27 you'll need to open your engine cockpit cover. Once open find several thru hull fittings in the hull area that have levers to open and close the water flow. One will be for the engine, another for the generator if you have one and another for the air/heater if you have that option. If this is new to to you find some one on your dock to verify what you're looking at. Once you've done this one time it will become second nature.
