This one has me stumped.

My Onan 5kw 2017 generator stopped starting a few weeks ago. I ripped her down and found that the hot wire going to the starter was corroded off. I removed the starter to find the positive contact stud was badly corroded. I replaced starter, cleaned up all corrosion, found the source of water infiltration (loose clamp on circulating pump hose), then sprayed everything with anti corrode stuff.
While in there, I changed oil, oil filter, fuel filter and impeller. I put everything back together and violo, started right up!

Ran it every day for 2 weeks or whenever needed without a hitch. Did not replace the sound shied, just in case..

2 day ago I put the shield back together. Now it starts for 2 seconds and then stops. I get a "2-7" code, which is something to do with voltage.

Took the sound shield back off, cleaned all terminal posts and wires connections at genset. Still same code. Battery is strong. Even turned off breaker at generator that allows for electric to flow out. Still starts for two seconds, stops and throws same code.

Any ideas?

Thanks much,
Bobby

So... I associated the genset shutdown with the sound shield. In my original post I said that I took the sound shield back off and still got the same code. That was not entirely true. I took almost the entire sound shield back off, leaving on the pieces that were not on the side where the battery cables, starter and other associated wires are located.

So I went back at it. I took off the piece of the sound shield on the other side. The generator started right up. Put that piece back on and generator did the same start up, shut down, code 27. Took it off again and I could start it back up.

Assuming that maybe I was pinching a wire (there are lots of white wires on this side of the genset), I carefully tucked all the wires deep into this part of the compartment and affixed the shield. She fire back up and now runs flawlessly again.

Maybe a pinched wire? Maybe some grounding associated with the sound shied? Not sure. But she continues to run smoothly. I'm still open to theories, if anyone has one.
