Folks,
I'm looking for a repacement fuel tank for a 2005 R21 classic that will fit at the original factory location in the engine housing. Would this item still be available from Ranger, and if not, can you provide specs and ordering info so I can get one myself, or have one made? Thanks in advance for whatever assistnce you can provide, Joe S.

Hi Joe,

On my 2006 R-21 Classic the original fuel tank was made by Tempo. My understanding is that Tempo no longer manufactures these tanks. Moeller, another fuel tank manufacturer, makes this tank http://www.easternmarine.com/moeller-12 ... k-630012lp which I believe is almost identical in its overall dimensions to the Tempo that is likely in your vessel. Eastern Marine has some of the best prices on the web (no affiliation, just a satisfied customer) but shipping to your door may raise the price to more than some other online stores. As always, your mileage may vary......

If you do replace the original tank, you will have to drill a hole in the top of the tank to accept the fuel return line fitting and hose. These tanks were originally designed for gas engines which do not have this requirement. Ranger drilled these tanks and added the return fitting at the time our tugs were assembled.

If you have any other questions feel free to ask PM and I will be happy to help.

Eric,
The previous owner had to replace the original tank when it was stolen. He bought what he thought was the correct replacement tank, but it does not fit in the original location. The tank is currently relocated under the stern seat, occupying what would otherwise be valuable storage real estate. I'll check the specs you provided against the current tank, maybe there's a difference and it will work. I'm still hoping to hear from the factory to see what they can share.
Thanks for the reply, Joe

There were a couple of owners that replaced the tanks in their R21 Classic and installed larger tanks under the aft bench seat. If you do a search in Tugnuts, you might find who they are, and then contact them to see if their old tanks are still available.

Rick,
I'd rather have the storage space vs the add'l fuel, but that's just my personal preference. Alex kept the tug in great shape and I understand why he preferred the tank under the stern bench (improved access to the shaft seal). If the original tank hadn't been swiped, it would have been a relatively simple matter of "pre"location. If I can find an original tank it will still be a simple project. Either way, I count myself fortunate to have found a tug maintained by a caring steward.
Tip of the hat to Alex, from Joe

Rick,
Somehow I read right over the top of the last five words in your post. Which is why my reply makes little sense... I'll try reading all the way through next time before I craft a response. Thanks for the good suggestion, Joe

Hi Joe,

I didn't realize you had bought Alex's boat. Alex had the idea to move the fuel tank and together we brainstormed the plan to make it happen on each of our vessels. Of course that was an interesting process because as you know he lives in Idaho and I live in Pennsylvania. We spent a lot of time on the phone and sharing pictures via email.

All of that being said, you might want to go to my owner album here on TugNuts and look at the album titled "Mods". After moving the fuel tank to the stern seat and the batteries behind the firewall it gave me a nice spot to store my toolboxes and a few spares under the engine hood. I really don't miss the space in the stern compartment as the exhaust and bilge hoses and their respective through hull fittings get in the way for storage in that area but the fuel tank fits nicely nested among them.

Just thinking you might want to consider all of the possibilities before you go through the expense and time to put everything back in the factory locations.

If I can answer any specific questions you might have please be in touch.

Hello,

I wanted to be sure I answered the post. We no longer carry the tanks for the pre EC model Ranger Tug R21's. Eric is spot on with his responses.

Thanks for checking in and best of luck with your new boat!

Eric,
Alex shared the following with me regarding the current (post stolen tank) installation scenario:
Eric has the original size tank (it fit nicely on the starboard side),,,just clearing all those exhaust hoses...the location of the fill and fuel sight guage were off to one side on the original tank too...the replacement I had to get, forced me to locate it on the port side to get the fill opening in an accessible spot.

So unfortunately the current situation is not what you and he had originally envisioned & executed, and I suspect not nearly as ideal. At this point I'm going to have to live with it for a bit while I do some more research on the availability of a suitable replacement. I do appreciate your input and the photo's of your install are impressive. Is there a part number on the original tank that you have? Or can you provide the physical dimensions of the tank you have?

Thanks in advance for whatever assistance you can provide, Joe

Andrew,
Thanks for the reply. Do you have a part number or the physical dimensions of the original tank?

Tuggertoy got back to me with the following:
Just checked my fuel tank. It is a Tempo fuel tank Part #630012
It appears to measure 14"W x 14"H (to the top of the filler cap) x 20 1/2" long

And, here is a link I found...
http://www.rickracers.com/product_info. ... ts_id=3378

I've followed deadends like this before so I can't say if they actually have one or if they are even still in business, or good to deal with...but it may be a start. The price is good and just maybe they actually still have one..I'd recommend phoning them to verify the dimensions and if they even have one... they just might not have purged it from their catalogue so insist they actually lay hands on it and physically measure it. They're located in Orlando.

Thanks Alex & Eric, I'll look into this. Joe
