Steve and Tina,
Most US boat insurance policies cover Canadian waters, although my previous policy excluded Alaskan and upper BC waters in the Wintertime......my current Safeco policy covers Canadian waters year-round. SO, the solution is, to READ your policy. It will have paragraphs in plain English that define the "Territory" to which the policy applies, and also where it doesn't. And it may have language about the time of year, as well.
My guess is, you're covered year-round in the Gulf Islands, and up to the top of Vancouver Island, BC. That's where my previous policy drew the line, at Malcolm Island, near the top of Vancouver Island. Also, you may or may not be covered in Mexican waters.
When people write about the "cost" of their boat insurance, these are the matters they usually overlook. Yes, you can purchase cheap boat insurance. But there are all kinds of levels of coverage, beyond the mere numbers on the declarations page, for the hull and the liability. I find it's usually better to pay a bigger premium and get broad, multi-country coverages, and not have to worry.

I'm a new Ranger R25 owner and have just gone through this Marine Ins. coverage issue with my Ins Co. The Hartford or more exactly the "Inland Marine AARP Insurance Program Property & Casualty Ins. Co of Hartford". They don't do a lot of boat insurance but as my home and autos are insured with them it made sense for me to go with them. I did have to also obtain an Umbrella Ins policy to meet the liability limits imposed by my Marina.

My boat Ins covers me in US and Canadian coastal waters. In fact this is defined as being within 20 miles of the coastlines, which in the Puget Sound, San Juan Islands and Gulf Islands is a no brainer. I also believe the 20 mile limit is to restrict me from cruising in International waters although I'm told that is a 100 mile line from the mainlands. ;-)

The exact words in my policy state

"Navigational Territory
The navigational territory is the inland waters of the continental United States of America, the State of Alaska, State of Hawaii and Canada and their respective coastal waters within 20 nautical miles or less of the base-line offshore."

My advice, is read your policy, and knowing how legal a doc it can be, then follow up with a phone call to your Ins Co. for any clarification.

The Lucky Fin is covered by Progressive. I believe it covers all of U.S. and Canada. Upto 75 miles off shore. It gets us to the Bahamas on the banks and no further. They would not sell me a rider for the Bahamas because it is only 25 ft long. If it was 26 ft. they would do it. Oh well, there was life before insurance.

We have Progressive and it has covered us for 4 years in Canada and going through Canadian waters--up to 75 miles offshore. Where a rider is necessary is going to the Bahamas, unless you stay in a very limited area. That rider is not all that expensive.

My understanding from Progressive is they cover 75 miles from shore, but they will not sell me coverage to the Bahamas because the boat is one ft. to short to qualify. In other words you need to be 26 ft to buy the extra coverage. ( rider ) 🙁
