We have a new RT 31CB with factory purchased dingy and Yamaha 2.5 outboard. I am installing a grill on the aft/port curved railing that the outboard is currently occupying. The outboard and grill together would be crowding that space, not to mention a gas engine next to a hot grill. I'd like to reposition the outboard/rail mount to the aft swim platform railing. Needing a "T" joint for stabilizing the outboard mount, the only currently available "T" joint looks like mounting the outboard there, the outboard might interfere with the stern of the dingy. If that position does in fact not work (haven't tried it yet) as a possible solution, has anyone had a vertical section added to the swim platform railing so that the dingy outboard mount can be placed in a more suitable location?

Hi ErikS, Welcome to Tugnuts. We have a 2016 31CB with hardtop. I had a 6hp nissan . I mount the outboard on the curved rail that you mentioned and I have the BBQ mounted on the swimstep guardrail. I will put a pic in my album. The BBQ is on the left and the outboard is on the transom railing. The downside is to BBQ we need to drop the dinghy which is really not a big deal.

Hi ErickS,

We added a tee to our swim grid and a stabilizing arm to hold our 6hp on our R27. The removeable stabilizing arm (uses pins like the Bimini) is necessary for rigidity of the swim rail. We put the tee and mount on the angled portion of our rail because we have a kicker motor mount on the swim step in the straight section that would interfere. The barbecue is on the boat rail. Love it all. Works great. We can barbecue without moving the dinghy and the motor is kept away from the heat and fuel is kept off the boat. Also easier to get back and forth to the barbecue to the galley when grilling. The only downside is the added weight to the far aft port corner which causes a slight list which we have balanced with added weight in the starboard vberth locker.

Here are some photos. Note that in the photos the motor is mounted on the outside of the swim rail. We have since moved it inside. While easier to move to the dinghy from the outside the dinghy would hit the motor in rough seas. Works fine on the inside on the rail and even allows the flushing of the motor in a bucket while on the rail.

Richard Becker in the Ranger Tugs parts department can set you up with all the parts needed.
