I currently own a 2010 25 Classic Ranger Tug. The hull color is Navy Blue and the stripe around the cabin is tan. Due to the prolific hurricane season there is some fiberglass repair required. I am considering painting the stripe to alleviate the buffing required to keep up with that stripe. Has anyone painted the stripe? Comments? thanks in advance

Fly2,
As you probably know the hull is a polyester based gel coat. Back in 2010 I believe they were getting their gel coat from RevChem.
So for painting, which I think is a great idea to reduce the gel coat’s propensity to oxidize and fade, one of the best blue hull color matches is this:

As for the color of the tan stripe you were asking about, I have seen quite a number of different shades of tan for that stripe on different Ranger Tugs over the years. I’d recommend looking up the AwlGrip or AwlCraft 2000 color charts and pick the tan you like best!

PS: if I were going to paint, I’d definitely go with the acrylic AwlCraft 2000 over the AwlGrip. The AwlCraft is much easier apply and much easier to touch up or repair down the road.

If you are trying to decide between doing gel coat repairs or going with paint I’d recommend this video for some basic differences between the two materials:

Fly2,
The stripe is tape. Why not just remove it. Heat it with a hairdryer and peel it off. A little goo gone on left over glue and you're done.

Maybe on the newer boats the stripe is tape, however on my 2014 RT25SC the stripe is gelcoat. I suspect the 2010 is also gelcoat.

I think Tony was referring to the white pin stripe tape that separates the tan from the white upper hull color. The OP mentioned the wide tan gel coat stripe going around the outside of the cabin.
BTW, Ranger Tugs does not ship the gel coat for repairs as it is considered hazardous material. You have to get the gel coat from RevChem directly to do a gel coat repair. An old number for RevChem was (253) 305-0303 but Ranger Tugs Parts probably has the number if it’s changed since 2014.
It was my experience on my old cabin cruiser that a good gel coat repair tech can PERFECTLY match a color for a repair. I was astounded at his ability to perfectly match off-whites, blues and reds on my cabin cruiser repair!

My white 2016 c30 has a 2 inch wide black stripe around it near the waterline that is tape. bought a roll online for short money to do repairs.

My boat does not have any tape either on the hull or cabin, it is all gelcoat. As far as getting products from RevChem I would be careful. I could not get a match on my blue hull color from them. The gelcoat on my boat faded in less than 2 years outside. I would go with an experienced gelcoat person, they can do amazing work if it is a small area. However, painting is the best approach for large areas, if done correctly it should give good service for 10+ years with only waxing each year. My opinion.

All,
Very kind of all of you to share your experience and knowledge. I have a great fiberglass guy here in Pensacola. The problem with that is he is very busy because of the hurricane. I will get done soon and I will try to post some before and after pictures when it is done. Thanks again!

I got Hunter Green gel coat directly from Ranger Tugs parts not a month ago.

If RT Parts is now shipping gel coat that’s a change in their previous policy.
Per Kenny Marrs a few years back:

“Our customers can now purchase gel coat directly from Revchem. Anytime you need gel coat you can call them direct as they are set up to ship hazardous material. Their number is (253) 305-0303.

Thanks,
-Kenny”

Why isn’t the factory weighing in here? Which are gelcoat, awlgrip, etc? Be nice to know before we mess with any of it!

I believe it is actually the catalyst that is hazardous material. I also have received gel coat from the factory, however, I had to buy the catalyst from West Marine.

I got a pint of gel coat for my 2018 R-23 to repair a ding from Ranger about 2 months ago. Tim in parts just needed the year and hull number. Easy peasy. You have to buy the catalyst locally it can’t be shipped. It was a perfect match.

Your brown stripe is gelcoat. If you email me I will send you some before an after pictures of a 2009 r25 that I restored to the original finish. Hard work but worth the effort !! We did the entire boat and it looked like new when we were finished. We ceramic coated it to prevent it from happening again. You can PM me as well. Kevin, R23 [My Way] Kevinvndrhydn@gmail.clm
