Has anyone re-painted their R-21? I'm thinking of having the hull color changed. Type of paint used and results? Approximate cost? DIY or done by a shop?

I've not repainted my boat but I have painted a 14' skiff and the hardtop I made for my 21EC.

The stuff I used on my skiff I would not use again nor recommend (system 3 LPU 2 part polyurethane).

What I used on the 21EC hardtop was great. Easy to use. Roll and tip application method...google that. It's an easy application method - you simply roll it on then use the tips of a badger hair brush to smooth it. Do small approx 2' sq area at a time or have 2 workers, one rolling the other tipping. It's really better than spraying. This is what I like

The Interlux people provide extensive 'instructions' which I followed carefully. This means you buy not only the expensive paint ($60-80/qt depending on source) but also their proprietary primer and solvents for thinning. The paint DOES need routine thinning. But it goes on easily and, for a properly prepped substrate, looks beautiful. The interlux perfection is for above waterline.

I"ve also seen hulls repainted professionally with Awlgrip. Now that's some expensive paint! And, again, you must buy THEIR solvents, etc. I didn't get the sense Awlgrip was easy to apply either. Maybe someone here will have experience using it. But it looks great.

Awlgrip. There are things in life like roofing, bottom paint and flooring that I have learned are best done by someone else. You may want to add painting a boat to the list.

Thought I'd bump this post and see if anybody has any more ideas. I'd like to get the boat painted in northern California or southern Oregon to keep travel distance reasonable but I'd travel farther for a good paint job.
Any input would be welcome. Thanks to everyone that replied so far.

As a start you may want to contact Awlgrip and look for distributors in the area you want to have the work done. Then call the distributor for names of people they supply to. Eventually you should find a reputable place. I have seen a few boats done with Awlgrip and I was very impressed. You would have thought they were new boats. I had a repair done on my swim platform ( don't ask 😳 Backing up and trees don't mix) and the mechanic used Awlgrip. it looks great and has held up. It actually does not oxidize like the gelcoat either. He colored the primer so even if it gets scratched it won't show.
