Like others here, we had some paint bubbling and flaking on the aluminum door frame. I generally blame my pup for shaking salt water everywhere in the cockpit after swimming. I ignored the problem as long as I could. It would have been easier to remove the door, but the screws wouldn’t budge so I did the scraping, sanding, priming, and painting in place in several sessions with various iterations of masking with the door open or closed.

I couldn’t find the exact paint used by Cutwater - I did reach out to them, but my boat is a 2017 and they didn’t have that information. After some trial and error, I settled on Rustoleum Satin Black Protective Enamel in Black. It’s just spray paint from Home Depot. Make sure to mask off EVERYTHING; the overspray is significant. I only painted the sections that needed it and the color and sheen blended well with the existing paint. A high build primer might have worked better to hide the parts that went down to bare metal, but I just used a dark grey Rustoleum automotive primer. It’s fine.

The project was a pain in the ass, but it’s done and has held up well over the winter with the boat in the boat house. It’s a humid marine environment, but protected from weather exposure.

We’ll see how it holds up to more salt water spray from my pup in 2026. I expect this to be an ongoing battle.

I repainted my door frame on our 2014 R27 a couple years back as it was getting corroded as well. Is was able to find the exact color code (on our boat it is a brown color - RAL 8017) from the Diamond Sea Glaze website (the manufacturer of the door). Once you know the color code there are companies on Amazon that will ship you the preferred color in a spray can. You can also just add the paint from a can into a Preval sprayer. I chose to remove the door and frame and do the painting in the shop to make the sanding and masking easier. Neither were difficult to remove. It came out pretty good. As mentioned I also would use a high build primer in the future to hide paint/bare metal transitions.
