Was wondering if anyone travels on their boat with birds. We have two conures we are considering bringing with us to Canada. What are the concerns of going to Canada with them then returning back to the states. Does customs create a big problem in doing this?

Thanks for any help,

A friend of mine has a bird named Beattle, it's a parrot. They keep it on their Aspen. Beattle is very entertaining at yacht club cruises.
I don't think they ever take the bird to Canada though. I'll ask them.

It’s possible to bring pet birds into Canada. Info here: https://inspection.canada.ca/en/importing-food-plants-animals/pets.

It’s more complicated than for dogs. There are a few caveats:

- You may have to schedule entry in advance. Not all ports have qualified inspectors

- A vet certificate may be required (read elsewhere that it may need to be a USDA vet? If so, appt required in Seattle for office visit.)

- Multiple entries are restricted: “You must not have imported birds into Canada under the pet bird provision in the past 90 days”. A waiver is possible, but requires an application in advance.

- It's possible an Export Veterinary Certificate may also be required from the United States in cases where there is a disease outbreak. (Bird flu has been found in WA…unclear if that triggers this req)

- Unclear if bird seed is permitted. Fresh produce is prohibited… you’d need to buy in Canada. Pellets are probably OK, but verify.

It’s onerous enough that we decidedto board our budgie at Mochi’s Treehouse in Bothell instead.
