Hi all,

Newbie here. I am considering purchasing a 2005 R21 classic with a few cosmetic issues and was wondering if parts would be available from Ranger Tug or other. Your advice is much appreciated. Here is partial list of parts needed:

  • 1. Boat has corroded stainless steel keel strap (1" wide or so) covering keel from bow to stern. This strap is screwed into keel about every 8" or so. Seems like main purpose is to allow for beaching without scratching fiberglass keel, but I'm not sure. Is replacement part available? If not, any suggestions on replacing?
    2. Boat has 2.5" wide (or so) black molding on topside all the way around the cockpit. Several molding pieces are cracked mostly near stainless steel mounting screws. Is replacement molding available? If not, any suggestions on replacing?

Motor is Yanmar 3YM30 with 400 or so hours. I'll take any suggestion or advice on pros and cons of this vessel and/or motor.

Thanks,
Tim

I have a 2005 Classic 21. Have had it since 2010. My experience is that no model-specific parts are available from the factory. A lot time ago I got some filters, but not for several years. The broken black molding is an issue for me also and endemic to this vintage of Classics. No easy solution that I know of. Maybe trim the ends and re-attach.

Engine is bulletproof. Keep it oiled and fueled and you are good to go.

Enjoy your tug....the 21 Classic is an awesome boat.

Thanks TK.

Do you know anything about the stainless steel keel guard I described above? What is purpose? Do you have same guard on your tug? Any suggestions on how to replace?

Thanks again,
Tim

No guidance on the keel strap. My boat is on a lift and consequently is only in the water when being used. Keep strap is in very good shape.

Welcome aboard. I don't see why a sheet metal shop couldn't fab a keel strap of the proper gauge (perhaps slightly wider than the original to cover any gel coat wear from the original strap edges) using the original as a pattern for the screw holes.

Tim,
I have a 1992 21-ft classic. The keel strip on mine is a bronze half round strip about 3 quarters of an inch across. It is through bolted to the keel not screwed about every 5 inches. You may want to look into the bilge to check to see if your strip is also bolted. I am not sure but I think this strip may have been installed before the boat was assembled making it very difficult to remove and reinstal a new one.
Regarding beaching of a 21 classic with a full displacement hull. I wouldn't. You might find that the propeller, rudder and skeg. would be an anchor in the sand and make it very difficult to push back off. Also sand into your cutlass bearing and cooling system.
Regarding the gun-whale plastic blocks, mine are made of solid teak and are like new.
Good luck on your descision and if you like, you can PM me for further discussion.
Regards Don

.. my 2005 R21 also has the keel strip screwed into the keel about every 6" .. Rob

Gig Harbor Boat Works....maybe they'll sell you some.

But, you don't say it's damaged, just corroded.....it's stainless, so why not simply buff it in place above the water line? Below the waterline is probably painted over with anti-fouling anyways
