Hi - I bought a 2016 R27 with a 200HP Penta and it seems a bit slow at WOT. I wanted the 200HP so it would have a bit more GO than the 180 HP Yanmar which seems to top out at about 18 knots. I have a hard time getting much over 15 kts. Is there any factory performance curves available for this hull/motor? I have searched a bit on Tugnuts and can't find anything just right. Looking for a speed vs RPM curve or something like that or speed at WOT at least. Thanks for any help. I am fairly new to this site so I apologize if this is old news.

Scott, more information to address your question. Personally the 200hp D3 and Yanmar 180 are going to be close performers. It is a semi-displacement hull so it takes a great deal of HP to push a boat faster in the water. The Ranger never really planes.

I started this thread last spring with the hopes of getting a lot of responses so I could put an average performance spread sheet together for each model. The responses were good but not many so......

There are a few R27 that have good data for you to look at.

Things that can reduce performance:
Prop out of balance or damaged
bottom fouled
Boat loaded with gear
passengers on board
trim tabs not adjusted properly
........

You should realize a 8.6' beam boat that is stern heavy will have a significant performance change with added weight. I had a C26 with a 220 hp D3. After equipping the boat for cruising and loading it with supplies, fuel and water the best performanceI could get was 18kts 2 passengers on board. Add 2 more passengers 16.5 its. I did have to reduce the cup in the prop in order to maintain Volvos recommended WOT of 4000rpm. When I sold the boat I sea trialed the boat. All gear was removed except for the normal equipment needed 1/2 tank of fuel, half tank of water, 4 passengers and the prop was recouped to the original number .105. The same boat that I was cruising in with 2 passengers was now running at 20.5kts with 4 passengers in it and with 2 passengers I was able to see 21.5kts. The D3 are great small displacement engines, real "torquee" for 2.4L but that is what they are 2.4L.

My advise is check the bottom, check the prop, check WOT you must maintain 4000rpm at WOT if you want any type of longevity from this engine. If it is not turning 4000 rpm or more find out why. depending on the load you should be close to the boats posted in the thread above. Those number are real!

Thanks for the info. Very helpful. If anyone else has an R27 with Penta and has some data or thoughts, please let me know.

I took her out today and got 3820 at WOT with trim set for best speed. Maybe 16 knots with full fuel. So, not making the 4000 RPM. I did notice that the prop had some barnacles on it so that is probably causing some cavitation and this speed/RPM issue may be due to that. Also, the trim tabs and some on the bottom near the stern. Going to pull the prop this fall and have it reconditioned and all barnacles removed. Hopefully, that will help.

I have a 2014 R27 with 200hp Penta. If you have barnacles on the prop 16kts is really good. Clean the running gear and bottom and you will be amazed at the improvement. When we put the boat in in the spring I can get 18kts and 3900 RPM. Now after 5 months it is 16kts and 3800 RPM and I assure you there are no barnacles on the prop or rudder. I have cleaned them myself mid season. Just general green stuff on the boat bottom. This drop in performance happens every year as the growth builds up before pulling her out in the fall.

Let’s us know how it does after a haul out with full cleaning. I think you will be surprised.

Curt is right on with his comments. I am in the good position of keeping the boat ( a RT25SC) in a boathouse so so growth on the bottom is negligible. The daylight still hits the stern so I hang a weighted tarp off the swim platform. In spite of this, if I don’t go out for two weeks my max rpm can be down at 2800 rpm (WOT on a 150 is 3000). Give me an hour running at 2650 and the slime is off the bottom so I get 3000.

If you’ve ever wet sanded the bottom of a sailing dinghy just before a race you will know exactly the difference a smooth hull and running gear can make.

I had the prop cleaned and refinished (it had barnacles on it), I now get 4000 RPM at WOT and over 20 knts so all is good. Thanks for the help.
