I have a 12 volt/110 Volt fridge/freezer (43 quart) and I'm stumped as where to put it on my R25.

A. Under the V-berth --- Compressor maybe too noisy
B. In the rear state room (the Cave) --- Negates use as a sleeping area
C. In the cockpit --- Maybe too crowded
D. On the swim grid --- Maybe to dangerous

Where have others placed their fridge/freezer?

In case you might be wondering, its going under the V-berth!
Have booked an electrician for Friday to install a 110 Volt and 12 Volt receptacles.

Rethink the vee berth. Heat is going to be an issue.
The swim platform would be my first choice. I would make an elevated wood base that is mechanically clamped to the platform and have the freezer sit into a well on top of that with hold down straps and a top cover. The well would deflect direct waves and propeller spatter from hitting the freezer.

Not sure on the R-25, but on my R-27 I am told that without the genset it fits in that locker and there is even a 12v outlet in there already.

I think I have the same 43 Qt freezer. I chose to put mine in the cave, for now. My backup plan would be a secure location on the cockpit, with the addition of the necessary power outlet...I have an R29.

Hello
Well I've had the Fridge/Freezer lodged in the V-berth for a while now and it cycles on and off without too much noise in my opinion. The concern I did have was heat, but have found there are no issues here.

I feel that if the noise of the compressor when at anchor is a little louder than desired, I feel I can simply turn the unit off until morning. Given that it is a Fridge/Freezer and if turned to "Freeze" then I would expect the lower half or more will still be frozen (I hope) by morning. So far, I don't see this to be a problem.

If I lodged the Fridge/Freezer in the "Cave" then that just about negates this as a sleeping area. Placing this expensive piece of equipment ($850) on the Swim-grid would have to be a last resort.

I am delighted with the Engles 43 quart Fridge/Freezer and its placement under the V-berth is perfect, given the choices I had.

Hi Bob, yes, that is the same make/model that I bought. I too am very happy with its performance! The R29 does not have a V berth as such, so I am more limited in potential locations: the cave and the cockpit. I have not had to use the cave as a berth yet, but when I do, I will only have the cockpit left. I do have friends who put these in the bilge storage....

Hi friends,

I am considering getting a smallish refrig/freezer to use as a freezer. I want to avoid using the sleeping/storage area, aka "the Cave" in the cabin.

For those with R29's I am wondering if you may have placed a refrig/ freezer in the under-floor storage in the cockpit? If so port or starboard? What has to be done to get a proper plug-in?

Also, I am curious which refrig/freezer you chose?

Any comments will be helpful 🙂

Thank you in advance.

Hi Ann! I have the Engels 43 quart. It is either a fridge or a freezer, but not both at the same time. Uses very little power and switches automatically between 12 volt and 120.

Hi Anne,

We don't have a freezer and don't really need one yet. But it is something I have kept my eye on for some reason. The Engels that Sue uses has a top notch reputation. Some time back, surfing around the internet for info on them, I came across a trucker's forum (where Engles seem popular). Someone posted this brand and model as a close competitor to the Engles -- a Whynter 45 qt. It seems to get very good reviews (check out reviews on Amazon and the link below, among others), and is nearly 50% of the cost. Can't vouch for it myself, but I thought I mention it to you, FWIW.

Here's one link to it.

Good luck!
