In preparation for cruising in the PNW next summer I was researching guides online and see that Waggoner PNW 2012 has a good looking guide. When looking on their web sight I saw they just introduced (Sept. 2012) an app for the same guide. My questions, not having had any experience with Waggoner, is this a good guide for cruising the Puget Sound, San Juans, Gulf Islands and up into Desolation Sound and beyond? Also does anyone have any experience with the recently released APP?

Lastly if not Waggoners, who do you use and why?

Thanks for your help,

Jim F

Hi Jim

The 2013 guide is now out on their website fine edge books, there is a link with a Tugnut discound under vendors. It changed ownership 2 years ago and has now expanded to Alaska. It is pretty much considered the bible for the PNW.

There are several good books, but Waggoners is the best place to start your library. Very comprehensive, well organized, and provides an extensive look at the Salish Sea. We get one every year. First thing we do is take it Kinko's and have the spine cut off and replaced with ring binding. Makes it really easy to lay it open. We look forward to the digital version.

Many folks, including us, like the Dreamspeaker series. Wonder illustrations, well organized. The authors have attended our last two Pacific NW rendezvous's.

Cheers,

Bruce

Jim: Take a look at the new Dreamspeaker Guide for the Puget Sound area at http://www.tugnuts.com/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=3114&p=22824&hilit=Dreamspeaker#p22824. The Dreamspeaker series also covers areas up into Canadian waters. I have 3 of their books and love them for exploring the PNW area. Their new one will cover over 100 locations in the Puget Sound area... it's due out in May 2013 and can be ordered in advance (see post I referenced for details). -Barry

Nita and I have the ones previously mentioned but another one is The Burgee. It contains information about Marinas (including moorage costs), Stores, fuel locations and parks. We use it as much as anything else. It also contains Marina maps to show locations of moorages within the Marinas for when you get a moorage assignment by slip number.
All the best and let us know when you come up.

Ok, I've ordered the 2013 Waggoneer PNW Cruising Guide, thanks for all your thoughts.......I have another question thou. We have the Maptech Chart book that covers the Puget Sound and up to the San Juans and some of the Gulf Islands but nothing for up further and into the sounds such as Desolation Sound. What pry tell you Tugnuts suggest for paper charts for these Canadian waters?

Jim F

As far as the Canadian charts go, we have used the following chart booklets that the Canadian government puts out: Charts 3313 for all the Gulf Islands and 3312 for Desolation Sound and Jarvis Inlet. You will still need a couple of the other larger charts that covers the Strait of Georgia if you are planning on going up all the way to Desolation Sound. Doug.

We'd also recommend the strip chart #3311 Sunshine Coast, Vancouver Harbour to Desolation Sound. A 5-sheet small boat portfolio, it covers that whole section of the BC coastline. Quite useful - fills in lots of gaps.

Cheers,

Bruce
