Do you have questions about what it takes to cruise up the Inside Passage on your Ranger Tug? Ranger Tugs has agreed to sponsor a one day seminar/workshop on Saturday, March 13th, 2010 in Everett, Wa. We’d like to make the session as useful as possible, and would appreciate your suggestions for what to cover. With only one day, we won’t be able to do everything, but we can try! Topics for the day will include:

Things you Need to Know before Cruising
Itinerary Planning – How to pick a place to stop, and sample itineraries
Navigating and Piloting – reading your chart, picking a course
Tides and Currents – how to run the tidal passes
Running the Locks
Wind, Waves and Weather
Outfitting equipment required and desired
Anchoring
Provisioning
Water, Fuel and Wastes
Customs and Immigration
Communications – how to stay in touch (if you want  )
Dealing with Emergencies – medical, mechanical, electrical

With luck, Andrew will be there to help answer any questions you may have. I hope to have at least one other couple that has cruised their Ranger Tug to attend as well to be available for questions. We’ll probably have to limit attendance, so Jeff Messmer will handle the required reservations. He will be collecting signups at the Seattle Boat Show.

One way to use what you learn would be to join Jeff and his family on a cruise from Shilshole Marina to Desolation Sound leaving on Friday, August 20, 2010. The plan is to cruise “together” on the way up (though probably at two cruising speeds – 10kts and 18 kts), meeting each evening at the same anchorage/marina. Spend as many days as you want (or can) in Desolation Sound, then head home on your own. Jeff plans to be back by August 29th or 30th – in plenty of time for the September Rendezvous. We are looking for a volunteer cruise director...anyone interested?

Thanks for the heads-up, Mac. I'll definitely be there.

Wondering what the prospects are of ever cruising up the Inside Passage on a 21-EC...prolly with another 21-footer or two would make the best sense.

Knowing Messmer, though, his solution will be to upgrade to a 25-footer!!!!

Awesome. Sign me up for March 13th. Vicki will be in Chicago. And sign us both up for the Messmer Family Desolation Sound cruise.

So we all have more information for consideration... what does the task of cruise director entail?

Cheers

If we can'nt make it, someone has got to vidio tape it. I will pay for a copy.

I wish that I could attend but not enough notice to schedule the time off. One thing that would help in a big way is if Andrew or Jeff or someone could make DVD(s) of this I will pay for a copy. As I am sure there are a few other ranger owners planning a future trip there will likely be others. Also, if this is going to be an annual event it would be good to post the date earlier for those of us needing more advance notice.

Last I heard, for three boats to make the inside passage cruise, Andrew was recommending that all three move up to 29"s

Is there any way the main points could be posted on this site?

Jens Jensen Ranger Tug 29 New boat-- name Danca. We live on Quadra Island around the corner from Desolation Sound and would like to come join you On Aug. 20 2010. Desolation Sound is quite big how will we find you?? Please leave your radio on so we may contact you---what channel will you be using??? Danca.

Great to hear about the trip to Desolation....you won't be disappointed !!!!
Since you are heading into our "backyard" , Kim and I would like to invite all attendees to the first ever Ranger Tug Crab Festival for one of our overnight stops on the journey to Desolation. We keep a commercial crab trap in Georgia Str. "24/7", 365 days a year which we pull weekly in the winter and as a needed all summer. It is not uncommon to have 20 to 25 oversized crabs in the trap at a time !
We live very close to the Gibsons Marina ( where we also keep our Ranger ) and will shuttle all to our home for an evening of fresh crab....plus a chance for all to get off the docks for a meal !
Not sure of the route planning but we would be glad to provide some input as follows:
Poet's Cove would be a great overnight stop on your way out of U.S. waters since they include use of their pool, hot tubs etc. with moorage and this is also an easy Canadian Customs clearing centre. Poet's Cove to Gibsons is a nice day run and includes the 22 mile crossing of Georgia Str. which can be a handful for all vessels ....we'd be happy to arrange moorage for all in Gibsons. Gibsons to Pender Harbor would be the next possible leg of the journey followed by Desolation. Regardless of the final routes chosen keep in mind that we will be heading into prime boating areas during prime boating season so reservations well in advance will be required to get dock space anywhere.
Count us in to hook up with the group in either Poet's or Gibsons and continue on to Desolation .
We look forward to seeing everyone in March !

Awesome! Your crab trap is an inspiration, and I have to share something I just learned yesterday. You probably already know. The founder/chef at the Herb Farm in Woodinville, on his twitter feed (yes, I do) said, "When choosing a Dungy, look for ones with barnacles on their shells. They'll have more and better tasting meat."

I've been eating them all my life, but had never heard this. I asked why.

"Dungeness crabs molt once a year. Barnacles show older shell, bursting w/meat & best flavor"

Yum!

There are a lot of main points - it's a fairly extensive subject. You may have already seen mention of my book, the purpose of which is precisely to provide a thorough discussion of what it takes to head north in a small boat. What sort of boat, how to equip it, what you should expect and plan for in an extended Inside Passage cruise, what skills you need, and a bit about the cruising areas along the way. If you haven't seen it, a preview is available on Lulu.com. It's also available on Amazon.

Hmmm -- I just spotted this post. It sounds to good to be true and Gill and I would love to attend the Everett Mar 13th event and the cruise to Desolation with Jeff et al.

I've been laid up some since Oct last year with a torn up left shoulder and I'm now just recovering from rotator cuff shoulder surgery done late in Dec. This left arm sling is really getting to be tiresome and hopefully can be caste off to the wind in two weeks time. No matter, I do have to be careful as surgeon told me to expect a 10% per month recovery.

Please sign up Gill and me for the Mar 13th Everett event.

Jeff -- what do you need from me wrt the Desolation cruise etc ?

I have started the list of those that have expressed interest in the Desolation Sound cruise. If something should change with your plans, please let me know so I may update the list. If you do not see your name listed, let me know and I will add it. I know there were others that have signed up at the boat show. I will get that list from Jeff once the show is over and update this list again.

As always, if I have mis spelled, incorrectly stated your's, your wife/husband/partner/friend, please let me know so I may correct it.

I've just received the sign up sheet for the "Points North - Cruising on your Ranger Tug" Seminar/wokshop from Jeff, and have sent an email to everyone on the list with a few details regarding the seminar. Please contact me if you think you signed up for the seminar, but did not receive my email message today.

The seminar/workshop is now full (actually too full!), so we can't take any additional signups for this date. If there is enough interest (and if the session goes well 😉 ), Jeff has promised to sponsor another class.

We have a 2008 Ranger Tug 25' with the 110 Yanmar Engine. Best cruising speed for us is 7 to 8 knots. We are interested in going on this cruise, but can't keep up with the faster boats traveling at 10 to 12 knots. Are there any slower boats that will be going on this trip?

Hi Dave and Maureen

We would like to sign up for the cruise Points North.
Due you have a date for this event.

Dennis and Darlene,
Great to hear that you are planning to join us on our cruise north! The date of departure will be August 19th from Shilshone Bay Marina in Seattle. Most vessels will be arriving back in Seattle on the 29th of August.

We have a number of R-25 that will be going north as well as one R-21. Right now, the plan is for one group to cruise at 8 to 10 knots and the other at 16 to 18. We will be traveling at the lower speed thus achieving 5 gph burn verses 10..... Not only that but boating is not just about arriving at your destination but the trip to get there!

Below is the updated list of attendees. As you can see, there are currently 22 vessels signed up! If your vessel name and model are not listed, please send me a PM with the information. It is important with this number of boats that we get this information ASAP as we are currently in the process of making reservations in various marinas.

1. David and Maureen, Karma, R-29
2. Lyman and Janeane, Zuma, R-29
3. Bob and Nita, Nellie Too, R-29
