We broke down last Wednesday as we were heading toward British Columbia's Cape Caution from Port Hardy: NO STEERAGE!!! Yikes. So lucky that conditions were mild and there was a Pilot Boat within hailing distance who towed us about 10 miles back to Port Hardy. We are from Port Townsend, WA and the sweep boat for the Race to Alaska. We had our truck and trailer in Port McNeill which was not far for Craig to take a bus (he actually ended up hitch-hiking) to get there. We were able to use the Thrusters for steerage to get our Cutwater 28 from the marina to the boat ramp. That is where we discovered that we had no rudder. It was later determined to have occurred probably while we were backing up the boat on its trailer and struck something at some point in time- which probably set up a stress fracture line. After many hours and many miles of cruising, the rudder finally broke loose!!

So we pulled the boat on Friday, spent Friday night in Campbell River and arrived at the Port Alberni Dealership early Saturday morning. Unbelievably, Dave was able to get us a new rudder and have us up and running THAT SAME DAY!!! Now we are back on task.

THANKS TO THE PORT ALBERNI DEALERSHIP AND DAVE!!! Andrew Custis was instrumental in coordinating this effort. A very bad situation for us was not as bad as it could have been. We plan to be gone for a total of 6 weeks, starting our journey in Port Townsend on June 23rd. We are the official "sweep boat" for R2AK and there are still many racers making their way to Katchikan. The first place Racer completed the race in less 4 days from Victoria, beating last year's winner!!

Glad to hear that you made it to safety, have a great trip!
