Our trip to Desolation Sound in 2018 with RT was HOT! not only a HOT event, but HOT temps! We had a 3 portable fans to try and keep the cabin cool but it wasn't enough. Has anyone found a small portable air conditioner that work for them? Looking at a unit I found on Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/Cooler-Personal- ... op?ie=UTF8
I plan on going shopping today at my local stores to find a unit. I hope to find something before we head up to the Broughtons end of June.

Yes. Read all about it in. Shearwater-sailing.com. In the section on underway air conditioning. Our unit runs underway on the inverter and keeps the humidity and temp comfortable

Thanks Stuart!
Wow! that is quite the set up. Thanks for sharing.

Lisa,

Believe it or not, I am actually thinking about this - I haven't looked at the other suggestions yet - but I do have a smaller space to consider, so maybe something like this will do the job for me - cheap enough to try

EDIT - That's funny - we both found the same exact unit 😀

Before selecting such devices, consider reducing how much heat comes into the boat first and reduce such influx. Then you have a smaller problem to solve. I put in a small marineair unit that can be run from a small gen set and along with shades that eliminate sunshine heating up the cabine it doable, but then my heat tolerance is is higher than perhaps some other people

$39.00 and a glass of water? Sounds way to good to be true. I heard there is a bridge in Brooklyn for sale.

I tried a swamp cooler, worthless in a high humidity area like S Florida. Put in a $100 5000 Btu/hr window unit and some Mylar -foil window covers inside front, keeps her blanket cool at night and mostly ok when the covers are off underway.

The swamp cooler (also called evaporative cooler) types of "air conditioners" work only by evaporating the water in the unit by blowing air over/through it. An electric fan blowing air through a wet towel cools on the same principle. It has to change liquid water into vapor in order to create a temperature change. This actually works pretty well in the desert. It is completely useless in a high humidity environment - it won't cool at all, not even a little. Boats usually operate in high humidity environments, so..................

I have one and put it on the RV. Portable coolers are not as efficient as the split type because they draw in air from the inside of the room for heat exchange / exhaust, and then draw it outdoors through an exhaust hose. There are now also hoseless portables that cool down by evaporation systems. I like this type, the trouble of hose placement is eliminated. 😀
