So my head porthole is leaking and it’s not the inner hatch seal. It’s leaking down into the overhead light onto the teak counter and onto the floor. The outside porthole is round 2’and slightly raised off the hull. Is there some sort of temporary watertight band/caulk I could put around the porthole to prevent/minimize the leak until I can get it properly repaired.
Thanks

Best way is to remove it and reseal the outside of the porthole and re install the port. If you want to temporarily fix, duct tape some plastic wrap around ii. Don’t try to caulk the port from the outside without removing it, you will only make it harder to fix right. Any duct tape residue is easier to clean off with some solvents.

Hello,

Like stated above you would need to remove the port window and reseal. I would recommend getting a new window and bezel as it gets damaged sometimes from removal. You can order here parts@rangertugs.com. Also there are a few things i would mention:

1. Get a heat gun, this really helps when removing the old bezel and window. Heat up the seal and then use a new razor blade to cut the seal around the window bezel.

2. Once you have the old one out clean as much of the old seal out as possible. When installing the new one you will insert the window from the head and re-install the screws. You then want to lay a generous amount of sealant around the window frame before installing the bezel-this is your seal. It is important to get seal coming out from all edges of the bezel.

Hope this helps and if you need more info or have questions you can email me direct, my email is in my signature.

Thanks,
Kevin Lamont

Hi Kevin,

This is a problem many R-29's have had. We were in BC when ours started. Remove the outer frame and clean up all caulking possible. Then caulk the hell out of it replace the frame. This should solve the problem.
