Hello folks.

I've been looking at used R31's and some have portholes and windows in the hull and some don't.

Do the windows and portholes come on certain packages and/or are they year of build specific?

Thanks.

Here is an example:

That's an R-29. All recent models of the 29 have these ports. The R-31 does not have hull ports except on the port side in the aft stateroom.

Cheers,

Bruce

Interesting. I would think most would like windows in the forward berth.

Bruce,

That is disappointing.

I appreciate the reply.

There are enough windows in the salon to provide 360 degree views from there. The forward stateroom is pretty much just for sleeping and the overhead hatch provides enough light, just not the views. We have never felt the need for portholes in the stateroom.

I have often thought that it would be nice to have portholes on our R31CB. I told my wife that I thought I'd might like to add these. She said there is not way she is going to let me put a hole in the bedroom of her boat.

So there it is.

What if she let someone else?? A pro maybe?

We have had boats in the past with Porthole windows and find them marginally useful for seeing anything outside. We have had them leak is heavy seas and that is no fun. There is so much light coming in through the two deck hatches on the R29 that they really serve little purpose other than cosmetics. Personally, I like the looks of the hull of an old Viking or Hatteras convertible without all the modern euro-style windows, or fake window black outs. Look at the picture of that R29 and it is obvious that some of the windows are there for purely cosmetic reasons. The third round window is in the hanging locker and the aft two are fake - sitting behind the galley stove and drawers. It would have been a better use of $ from a functional point of view to omit some of the windows and install something useful such as galvanic isolator, radar reflector, transmitting AIS, etc. That said, in my opinion the look they have achieved with these reasonably sized windows is far superior to the huge black spaces with windows so many of the manufacturers are using that, in part, caused us to pass over those brands when we ordered our R29 last fall.
