For you Tugnuts in the Portland Oregon area -- once again, here is your chance to participate in the Portland Christmas Ships parade. The parade is in its 62nd year. There are two fleets - one on the Columbia River and one on the Willamette River (with several combined fleet cruises on weekends). The parade runs almost every night from Dec 2nd through Dec 18th this year. You don't have to commit to going out every night, or even to a minimum number of nights. You are welcome to join in for however many nights you can (after first signing up, producing proof of insurance, and getting some basic information about how the parade activities are organized).
If you are interested, start your planning now to give yourself plenty of time to think through how you want to decorate your boat (the group can help -- there are even some displays that might be available for you to use). There is a new skipper's meeting that you should attend if at all possible on Oct 19 in Portland. My first year in the parade (2014) there were three Ranger Tugs in the Willamette River fleet. Last year (2015) there were two. On our biggest night last year, there were about 44 boats out. We need more Ranger Tugs!
It is a wonderful opportunity to gain skill in night and cold weather boating, while having a "safety net" in the form of a flotilla of excellent and safety conscious skippers. The camaraderie of the group is special. I've learned a lot about the capabilities of my R27, and I am a better skipper for it. Plus, being in a nighttime holiday boat parade has an element of magic to it.
If you are at all interested, check out the recruitment poster below and go to the group's website (http://www.christmasships.org). If I can answer any questions or put you in touch with the President, who can answer even more questions, feel free to PM me.
