I will be disconnecting the house batteries soon to inspect them and install a Victron battery monitor shunt.

Besides killing the shore power and taking pictures, is there any procedure I need to follow when disconnecting the batteries?

Thanks!

Mike

Make sure the battery switches are off, and cover your solar panels with blanket so you aren’t getting any charging voltage from the panels. That’s what I did, at least.

Just as CruisingElvinRay suggested. Turn off all battery switches and cover the solar panel with a blanket. Also disconnect from shore power and turn off the switch for the inverter.

Turn everything off. You don't want to disconnect the batteries with them under load, carrying current.

My solar controller has a circuit breaker in the port lazarette right next to the controller. Same style breaker/switch as the windlass.

Although it is not quite as important in a boat I still disconnect the negative first and reconnect it last.
(There's not a lot of things that a wrench can ground out on compared to working on a car battery but it's just a good habit.)

Zip tie all wires for each terminal and park where the group goes. Take a picture of the wire setup before dismantling. There should be a fuse on the leads for each lead from the solar controller. Remove the fuses.

Second vote for zip tying the terminals together. Also good to label while in there

Thanks for the assist!
