Propane for your Magma railing grill - a different solution

After 7 seasons of using the typical green Coleman camping propane bottles I became disenchanted with them for several reasons. They can’t be safely refilled. The empty bottles can’t be recycled. And they have become pretty expensive - $8 to $9 a bottle.
So I bought a Flame King 5 pound (1 gallon) refillable tank and strapped it to the swim platform directly underneath where my Magma grill is located on the stern rail.

When not cruising I unstrap the tank and take it home with me. After a few months of use this is working well for me. I’m using edge guards on the bottom of the tank to prevent it from scratching the swim platform. The bottle is positioned vertically and uses two NRS 1.5” heavy duty straps to secure the tank. In heavy seas it hasn’t budged from its location.

We typically used 3 to 4 of the Coleman propane bottles for the Magma grill per season. One fill (under $4) of the 5 pound tank lasts a whole season. So that’s a two year payback for the change. And I feel a lot more environmentally friendly.

I have been thinking about green bottle replacements as well so this is great. What kind of connector/adapter are you using to connect to your grill? On my Dickinson grill, the green bottles screws directly into the unit/valve.

I used this hose.

One end to the 5 pound propane tank and the other end screws directly into the grill valve. I typically leave the valve screwed into the hose when not in use.

Here’s the edging I used on the bottom of the propane tank and in the upper tank holes to prevent scratching the swim platform and chaffing the tie down straps.

I use the 5lb canisters as that is what is located in my transom locker (C30-CB). I use one for the interior propane stove and the other has a dedicated hose / regulator for my Magma BBQ.

Many years ago when we lived in the USA we used these canisters. Good idea. Since returning to Canada and Vancouver Island the places that will refill a propane tank have dwindled in number every year. They are also not so convenient to marinas. Chimo I was thinking of doing the same thing. Could you post pictures of your setup when you have a chance? Any issues with rust? I was looking at lockers for tanks, but they seem super expensive.

Last summer REI Had a killer deal in the 5 lb propane tank, adaptor hose, a custom carry case for $99. Made by Ignk. I too struggled with throwing away all the 1lb green Coleman canisters. I keep on of those green ones on the boat as a spare. But I keep the 5 lb canister at home and only take it on the boat when I know we will be grilling. It works great

Flame King makes a safe refillable small propane canister and refill equipment that’s environmentally friendly and designed to be refilled. The Coleman canisters are not supposed to be refilled . I’ve been using the Flame King canisters in my grill, heater and portable cook stove for years. They work great and are easily refilled from a standard large propane tank.
