Would like to learn from anyone who uses a propane-powered outboard as a backup to their inboard diesel - pros and cons. Thanks in advance.

I own a 5 hp Lehr outboard that I purchased 3 years ago from West Marine. The first time I tried to start it, there was no water coming from the engine. I shut it down and took it for warranty repair. The servicing dealer told me that they must have started the engine in China at the factory and ran it dry. He told me the impeller was burned. After replacing the impeller I have used it sporadically. It runs loudly with significant vibration. When you lay the outboard flat as directed in the manual the engine leaks oil. The overall quality is poor.

I was enthusiastic about purchasing this engine, it runs on propane, eliminating the ethanol related issues. Propane runs very clean with few emissions. I also liked the concept of not having to have gasoline on the boat for this engine. This engine can run on a standard 1 pound barbecue style canister. You can use your propane on board your Ranger Tug as well.

I wish I had purchased a 6 hp Mercury four stroke instead.... Take a look at the reviews on West Marine's site before you purchase a Lehr, you will get some idea of what others experience. Some really seem to like the engine and give it good reviews. That however has not been my experience.
