R-21 Port-a-pot or Marine Head?

Hi All,

In mulling over the potential options on an R-21. I am stuck on the port-a-pot versus Marine Head. I have used a port-a-pot for years on our various vessels (all less than 20 feet). So I am familiar with the plusses and minuses of them.

What I am struggling with is a marine head really a worthwhile upgrade on an R-21? What capability does a marine head give that a port-a-pot not? I guess one is greater capacity?

Looking at the used boats for sale, it appears the vast majority are equipped with a marine head.

If it was me, I would prefer a port-a-poti. That way, if two people are sleeping in the v-berth, it could be moved to the cockpit so if needed during the night, one could use it without disturbing the other.

I have both, I have a full enclosure for the cockpit so when there will be locations to empty the potable unit we use it. Extends the time between trips to port for a pump out too.

HEllo Dan,

The marine head consumes a considerable amount of V-berth storage...as you are aware, storage space is already minimal on a 21EC.

I bought my boat used. It had the portapot; I'm very happy with it for the reasons mentioned above. Ability to move it from the cramp V-berth is a huge benefit.

If you're considering ordering a new R-21EC, I don't think you have an option to get a Port A Potty, I believe they all come with a marine head as standard. You might want to ask your dealer.

are (port a potty)they not illegal in some provinces up in Canada, such as in Ontario in not equipped with shore pumpout system?

I second this thought and can confirm that the marine head can not be used without waking the second person in the berth. It could even be moved into the cabin by the door before going to sleep.
