Hi
I have a 2009 R-21EC with factory installed Air Conditioning. This past Saturday the outside temperature was 91F yet after 2-hours with the AC on full blast the cabin Temp was 92! The unit seems to put out cool but not cold air. The filter is clean and the batteries are fully charged. Does anyone have any ideas what I should check? Can anyone tell me how cool I may expect the cabin to get with 91F temp, 2-adults and full sun?

Check for freon leaks. Its sounds as though your system has lost some charge if you have cool air but not cold. Had the system been working prior to this?

I have no experiance with these units, but I have heard the could use sea water to transfer heat from the cabin to the water. Do you keep your boat in the water all the time? It could be possible that the raw water circuit is clogged, valve closed, circulation pump has failed (Circuit breaker, motor reset button?) If this system does use this type of heat transfer, it could also emulate low freon, i.e. cool not cold air blowing out of the vents.

As Gregg said, freon charge could be low. I have seen leaks occur at the service ports. Verify the caps are tight, soapy water check around those would reveal any leaks.

Out side temperature (air and/or sea water) will certainly determine how cool the inside could become. But, too many factors are in play to tell what the cabin temp should be at a particular outside temp. Its more important what the temperature is coming out of the vents. Just a guess, 20-25 degrees below ambient temp?

AC is one of those options I wished I had chosen to be added to my boat.

How long have you had the boat? Maybe a call to your dealer would be helpful.

Best of luck, hope its simple

An AC problem that we experienced with Orion. The AC was turned on and as with your situation the air was not as cool as it had been in the past. Walked outside and noticed that the flow of water from the condenser discharge was less than we had seen before. When we pulled the boat out of the water we found debris covering the intake of the condenser pump inlet. Now when we turn on the AC one of us will always look out and check the flow from the discarge. The AC works fine now.

May this help you in your troubleshooting.

Also, if the cooling water flow is low, check the sea strainer. The sea strainer on the A/C is so small, it doesn't take much to clog it up.

Hi All
Thanks for all the suggestions! I am working through them all one by one. The strainer is fine. Output water flow seems good. I still need to check the freon as suggested...

Note: We received delivery of the boat in March 2009 and live in Florida. It did seem to put out marginally cold air at first and now is worthless. Of course the water and air temp were considerably cooler in March (If you think it's hot where you are, try Florida in July with no A/C). There was no A/C manual supplied with the boat so I will check the link provided.

I will let you all know how this works out.

I also have a great contact for Marv Air that is very very knowledgable. You are welcome to email me direct and I can forward that phone number on to you. andrewcustis@rangertugs.com. Thanks and talk to you soon!

Tug-N-Hug.
Your experience sounds familiar. The A/C in our R25 never did cool very well over here in Texas. Two weekends ago I noticed it was not cooling at all. Blowing lots of air, hot air. Too bad all the A/C folks are booked up until July 31st. Bummer. I would be curious to know what you find out is the cause of your problem. As for my unit, I don't think the compressor is starting.
