What methods do R-21EC owner use for managing their tenders/dinghy when underway ?

-Tow behind. If so how far back do you place the tender ? What about fuel burn affects ?
-Store on swim step
-Store in cockpit

I tow a 8 foot porta bote with a 2.5HP suzuki, before we enter a marina I pull it in and tie with a 3foot line.
To trailer the porta bote goes on the roof of the suv. Not sure of the impact on the fuel. When towing and all loaded for cruising I do 5.7 knots at 2200 rpm.
