R- 21EC in saltwater slip

Just sold Grand Banks 32 and I would want to keep a R- 21EC in saltwater slip in San Diego. Is there a downside to this, with this boat other than cost.

Hello Wingale, what do you intend to do with the tug? Day trip, weekend trip? One thing is for sure, your marina fees are going to be much less, and using a 21ec is going to be alot of fun! Being much closer to the water is awsome, this little tug is great on fuel and very maneuverable. If you get the trailer, just think about all the new places that you can go now! Of course, it is much smaller, no shower... But it all depends on what your needs are! We love ours, cannot wait til spring comes...

Thanks - Two killicks. Plan to use it just around the SD Bay - half day cruise then back to marina to hang out. Thought i might take it out for a coastal trip north. Do not think I would go any further than Ocaean Side of Dana Point. No long rang cruising. Doubt I would ever take it to Catalina although I have heard of a guy who has made mutiple trips in his 21.

Congratulations on having the R-21EC. We've had ours for a few months now and we love it.

Keeping the boat in salt water will mean you need to keep an eye on the bottom paint condition or the unpainted hull condition. Keep her clean as best you can. Salt water tends to create more crud on the hull vs. fresh later and possibly the under water anodes will get eaten up quicker in salt vs. fresh.

If your R-21EC is in a covered slip it will stay cleaner and try to minimize direct sun light on the boat to avoid discoloration over time. Also, less sunlight on the hull areas will lessen the crud building up and growing on the hull.

Of course, keeping the boat on a trailer is less cost then keeping the boat in water. If you have abundant local handy and well maintained boat launch ramps the trailer option would be more beneficial than keeping boat in water.

You should have lots of fun day boating around the SD Bay.... sounds awesome.

Thanks for your thoughts. I am familar with bottom paint that is needed and had the GB bottom cleaned once a month by diver. Covered slips in SD are vertually unheard of. The only protection is to wash and wax the boat regularly. Not only should the shorter length of the Ranger cut my monthly cost in slip fee, diver, it should be an easier wash and wax.

Our 21 came to us from San Diego. It's former owner put the first 450 or so hours on it it in about 3 years and we have added about the same amount. It is blue. The San Diego sun was very hard on the blue. The former owner painted the glass on the hatches with white paint, a great idea in your area. If you are considering a new boat I think I might talk Ranger into a white hull. Just think of it as your new mini GB.

The former owner made many trips to Catalina in the 21and only sold it for health reasons. I could not imagine paying what you do for moorage down there. I can pass on the former owners name if you PM me. I have his contact information with all the boat paperwork at brokerage where it is currently listed so it may take me a day or two to get it.

The former owner also did his own hull cleaning. He just jumped in you nice warm water and went at it with a long handled brush.
