R 23 Fuel Tank(s)

Did you ever leave work, drive home and because it is so routine cannot recall most of that ride at all? I believe that is what happened to me when I first read the spec’s for the R 23 when it first came out and it burned into my memory. In particular the fuel tank capacity of 80 gallons. It never occurred to me that the designers would put in different sized tanks depending on the engine option you selected. A tank is a tank, right? Well, not quite. The gas tank is 75 gal and the diesel is 80. Economy wise you will probably burn more gas than diesel. Both tanks fit in the same space, so why would the factory complicate inventory with two marginally different size tanks for the same boat? This may answer the question I had with the Garmin fuel gauge never reading full. Bad data in bad readings out!

I wonder if the different size tanks has to do with weight distribution of the outboard gas vs inboard diesel?

Maybe the difference is related to two different requirements on gas versus diesel or material composition required and standard sizes that are available. Maybe also of space as the inboard diesel engine could have changed everything. It's my guess that the people at factory and the designers have to make choices that don't always allow for standardization across the model line.

Hello John,

The physical dimensions of the tanks are identical. When you do GAS they require different baffles and wall thickness which lower the capacity by 5 gallons. Just as you thought, why would we want to make it harder on ourselves when we build and order the parts? We are with you but requirements change on different fuel sources.

Just as a an added thought. I am new to our 25 and in 15-20 years could possibly begin to remember all the nuances of the Garmin. One thing I do recall is the ability to set the tank size in settings. (Something I am sure you have already done but others may not know about).
