Subject: R-23 handling in rough weather ?

Has any R-23 owner been out in rough water (big swells, following seas, 3-foot waves, etc) with their boat ? If so, how did it handle ?

Windshield wipers.... how do they perform in rainy conditions ?

Windshield fogging.... don't see any defogging vents so when interior fogging occurs on the windshield can one reach the windshield easily to clear the fog ?

Good Morning. We have enjoyed our 23. The rough water capability of a 23 foot boat is somewhat limited to its size dynamic, however, the boat is amazing. Solid performance and of course dry. Powerful enough to ride on top anytime. No problems with the wipers or fogging. I think we are in a much bigger boat!

Agree.... impressive. Thanks for the link to videos. 🙂

we had some rough sea's on a trip up coast to ventura and on to channel islands. Heavy short period swell on the nose with a 30kt wind blowing over our starboard side. It was def a lumpy ride but we found 10 kts of speed worked well with the swell as to not nose the boat in to each wave. never felt underpowered. warm and comfy in the wheelhouse.
wipers... kinda suck that sweet curved windshield jacks things a bit. could prob mess w it and make it better
fogging...keep lots of microfiber towels handy
my 2 cents.

I've been out twice in what I would consider rough water (wind-blown whitecaps and 2-3 swells) and our R-23 performed beyond expectations. I was most pleasantly surprised by the lack of roll in the boat and the hull design cut through the swells just fine.

Wipers cleaned the windows great, but as another post says, the curve of the windscreen means the entire window is not serviced by the wipers. Nevertheless, the view out the window was not compromised. We did have one day where the windows began to fog, but opening one of the small top cabin windows just a bit seemed to solve the problem for us.

I see this is a very old topic but my wife and I were just looking at our R23 tied at our home dock rocking and rolling even with all lines doubled. We are in Irondequoit Bay off Lake Ontario and previously has a Sabre 36 for 14 years and crossed to Canada when we could get away.. We sold it for a smaller boat because my wife was working 7 days a week and the boat got less and less use.

Those days are over. The R23, in my humble opinion, is a fair weather craft. anything over 2 ft waves starts to get mighty uncomfortable and 4 footers kind of scary. In looking at this 23 ft boat tossing in our slip from wakes and fetch on a busy Labor Day weekend makes me think it must have a rather high center of gravity, cabin, furnishings and all. It's a pretty and well built boat but just not suitable for even moderate rough weather.
