Hi folks
I'm putting together a tool kit to keep on board our R-23 for basic stuff. I want it to be super compact. I know I'm missing stuff, whats in your tool kits? What's saved your day out there?
thanks,mark
TOOLS (added items in BOLD, thx 🙂 )
channel lock pliers
needle nose pliers
vise grip pliers (REG & NEEDLE NOSE)
small crescent wrench
auto loader screwdriver w/lots o bits
zip ties (multiple sizes)
duct tape
RESCUE TAPE
5ft of stiff wire (bailing wire)
multi-meter
fuses
RESCUE TAPE
ELECTRICAL TAPE
RUBBER STRAP WRENCH
ELECTRICAL CONNECTORS
MISC. SCREWS
thanks,mark

1/4 & 3/8 drive metric and standard size sockets, assorted screwdrivers, rescue tape, electrical tape, electrical connectors, spare engine filters.
What I have done is if I use a tool on the boat it stays on the boat. My tool bag has expanded greatly but I usually have what I need when something happens or I have the tool to help someone else.
You may need a bigger bag. 😀

I don't need a tool kit. I have Andrew's and Ralf's cell numbers!

Allen wrenches (metric and US)
Rescue (butyl) tape
Electrical wire
Wire stripper
Wire crimper
Wire crimp terminals
Flashlight

Thanks for the suggestions. I added to list in original post. I'm hoping my soft tool bag will fit under sink in forward berth, easy to get to and out of the way. I'll need to check into what spare filters I should have.

I'm trying to stay compact and light. Going to hold off on socket and wrench sets for now.

I could'nt find any need for allen wrenches on our R-23, did I miss something?

On our boat (R27) Allen wrenches are used for several of the stainless rail/Bimini connection set screws and the flag mast set screws, the galley faucet head, and the shower door handle. Our Volvo engine also has several socket head cap screws. Don't know if you have these on your R23 anywhere. You can probably get by with US standard sizes only.

right you are. I'll figure out sizes and add to list
thanks!

One thing I would recommend is an adjustable V belt (for and R21 anyways). While I haven't field tested one, it should let you replace a damaged belt for those pulleys (like the water pump on the R21) that otherwise can only be reached by first removing the outer belt, along with many other parts. I am guessing it would come in very handy in an emergency. I have also heard that an old pair of nylons can help in a pinch to do the same thing, but that may be an old wives tale - unless someone out there has experience with this.

and cary the suggested minor spares kit: oil filter, primary and secondary fuel filters, water pump impellers, alternator and water pump drive belt, the sockets to replace these, and enough oil and antifreeze to top up your systems. ..

i'd order and carry the factory service manual and parts manual for your particular engine ---
especially if it's a volvo. mechanics sometimes do not have those manuals.

Thanks again for all the suggestion!
Here is the latest list. Always open to add an item if it's needed. Everything fits in 2 small mechanics bags. One is stashed away and the other is easy to get to. Seems like I'm always digging for something.
