Has anyone moved the Webasco thermostat on a R-23 ?

I find it to be a rather inconvenient location. I have to get on my hands and knees
to opertae it, and would like to move it to a more accessible spot.

Thanks

I find that lifting the seat gives me enough room but agree that it is a bit tough to get to.

I relocated the thermostat control on my R23 from the cave to the v-berth so that it's easier to see, and responds to the v-berth temp rather than the cave temp.

It's a pain, but doable in an afternoon (~4hrs). The thermostat has quite a long cord, and the actual unit sits under the forward dinette seat, so moving it anywhere forward of the cave on the port side is within reach.

My first thought was mounting it next to the radio, but I decided against that because that would put the thermostat in direct sun and affect the reading. Instead I put it just inside the v-berth entry, on the port side wood panel that's above the sink.

There's a few challenges...

The cable is zip-tied in a wire bundle that's tucked up inside the top of the cave. I took the slow, tedious approach of unscrewing each zip-tie mount, loosening the zip-tie (you can jam a flat-head screwdriver into the locking mechanism to release it), pulling the thermostat cable out, and then re-tightening and re-attaching the zip-tied cable bundle. It would be much faster to just cut the zip-tie with wire cutters and replace with a new one.

To get past the wall that separates the dinette from the v-berth, you have to drill a hole from within the forward end of the cave. I choose to go just under the hot air duct, as I figure a smaller hole wouldn't matter below an already-bigger hole. But from that location it's not very accessible from the v-berth side - the shelves and wood panel behind the sink are in the way. I didn't want to disassemble everything, so I managed to push the cable through, then snag it with a hook of stiff wire and pull it out behind the wood panel. It would be much faster & easier to just disassemble the whole shelf assembly and remove the wood panel.

I would definitely do it again though, it is worth it to have the thermostat in an easy location for viewing & adjusting, and for using it while sleeping in the v-berth.

I've uploaded additional pics to my gallery, album: Relocating the Webasto thermostat

Rather than move it, get the remote. Richard in parts ordered me one. I had researched online that the interface supported a Remote. Change temp and settings from the v-berth

That's a much better option! I definitely recommend that to save yourself many hours of frustrating cable re-routing 🙂

Thanks for the pictures there isn't anything like working on your boat however I think I will call Richard and order a remote

Thanks Jim

Thank you all for the info. Will also check with Richard today.

Hello,

Talked to Richard and was informed Ranger does not stock or sell the Webasco remote fob.
The Marine Source was a dead end Website gives a phone number, tried to call and it sounds like
a fax number.
Called Sure Marine in Seattle and was informed that they do not have a remote fob.
So, it looks like the only viable option is to relocate the controller to a more accessible location.

After several hours researching a remote fob for the Webasco diesel heater it ended up in a dead end.
They do not make a fob for this unit. One is available for the Webasco combo heater/ A/C unit.

My solution will be to relocate the existing controller to a more accessible location.

End of story.

I don't believe the boat documentation typically includes the manual on the controller. Here is a link to the Webasto website that provides information on installation and operation of that SmarTemp 2.0 controller. http://www.techwebasto.com/documentatio ... l-2-0.html

And here is a video link that shows how to use the controller. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-jp0yRB1LQA

I found that once I went through these things, the location of the controller was acceptable and not worth the work of relocating. There also is an issue with the fan running all night long, draining your house batteries if not connected to shore power. The instructions show how to turn the controller from continuous to timed.

Thanks for providing the site. I could not print the instructions in English which seems a bit odd.
