Greetings

I have reading about AIS. I have the Garmin 7212.

There is an option that allows me to turn on AIS RECEIVE

Does this option work as is or do I have to add on a AIS unit?

Receive I assume allows me to see other ships while transmit allows them to see me ??

Should I be able to see other ships that are transmitting AIS??

Maybe I'm reading too much!

Seeing AIS targets (ships) requires the Garmin AS300. Seeing targets AND being seen requires the AS600. You can use your radar, even in fair weather, to acquire and track MARPA targets.

Here's some info on MARPA (Mini-automatic radar plotting aid). It is particularly useful in poor visibility. You can acquire and track multiple boats which may not have AIS. Also a good way to keep track of what's behind you.

Here's a fairly current long thread about AIS in this forum.

Cheers,

Bruce

Hello Ann and Brian,

You need a source of AIS Receive signal connected to your NMEA 2000 network. Then your Garmin 7212 can be enabled to SHOW the AIS info using the setting you are asking about.

The AIS signal can come from a VHF radio that has AIS receive capability or a dedicated AIS unit.
