Has anyone known of this Ranger model to list on the back right side(if you are facing the back of the boat) when the water tanks are empty. The generator and batteries are on that side and we have been told it is normal to list because of that. The battery compartment floor is soaked with water and soft. It seems strange that this is happening and we have been told this is normal and that we can fix the problem by adding weight to the other side. Boat was pulled and bottom seems fine.

My 2012 R27 has a definite lean to port, probably as you noted due to the Genset and batteries being located on port. I plan to put my tool box and other items in the V-Berth starboard storage to compensate somewhat. However, a wet battery compartment is seriously not good. You have the danger of corrosion, voltage drops and electrical short circuits that can be catastrophic (among other things) depending on the state and configuration of your wiring. It sounds like you either have a leak somewhere or the drain at the back of the battery compartment is clogged. I've attached a picture of my battery compartment so you can see where that drain is. Its not easy to see. There is also a small flap that is part of the exterior drain exit. If that flap is bent inward (from a following wave, perhaps) so as to be inside its retaining ring, it may impede water exiting. Also, check the all-around hatch sealing tape to make sure it is present, fixed properly in place and has no gaps. You might even check the Genset exhaust for water leaks that would drain into the Battery compartment as well as the hatch sealing tape for the Genset hatch cover. There are others on Tugnuts who have a lot more experience and troubleshooting Fu (as in Kung-Fu) than me, so hopefully they will have more to say. GF

Concur.....put heavier items n starboard locker such as tools, oil, spare anchor n more.

I agree with the above, and in addition, I found that in a following sea, waves swirled and came in under the transom door and flowed around the seat, and entered the battery compartment as well as the starboard locker. And in head seas, water rushed down the walkways and gushed into the cockpit. My solutions were to place a stop water on the sill of the transom door that stopped the water from entering, replaced the gasket on all the hatches, sealed the lift handles that had holes that passed water, and created water diverters to channel the deck water overboard before it reached the cockpit area. I replaced the decking in all the lockers with PVC foam board 3/4" with additional drains. You will find that the factory had installed drains in each locker, but they never allowed for complete water removal, hence the rot.

Alice J, do you have pictures or a description of the water diverters for the topsides walkways? I've thought of doing the same but haven't put much effort into it yet. GF

Thank you to everyone for the helpful responses. May have to have survey amended......besides your responses I have had a friend suggest that batteries were possibly not strapped down, vibrated causing floor under batteries to crack and perhaps cause battery fluids to get on floor. Again, thank you.

I'm not sure that batteries would move around that much if they were not strapped down. I'm not saying they don't need to be anchored, they do. If the batteries leaked that much water to damage the wood and crack the floor you would have had to add a lot of water to the batteries "a lot of times". I believe all the suggestions posted to your thread are good. Bottom line is the compartments need to be kept dry and ventilated. Finding the source of the moisture and keeping it out is a priority. I started a new thread to address some of your question. I didn't want to post it to your thread because it addresses more than water or moisture damage. I believe it is still relevant to your question. Good luck with resolving the water damaged compartment and its repair.
