We spent our first weekend on our new r27 - "little Tug Boots" last weekend in Apalachicola. And while I read about all of our Northern friends "Winterizing" I have a little different problem and it's with a system that many of you don't have -- Factory Installed AC. I'm waaay too old to be comfortable in our humidity without it and it works GREAT.

While we were at dinner in town one evening -- it dropped cabin temp from 86 to 69 !!!

So here is my little issue... I sleep on the port side and the sound level /noise of the ac equipment is a little HIGH - especially when it recycles.

So before I start exploring and experimenting I thought I would query you more experienced Tug folks.

Has anyone else experienced this issue and if so were you able to dampen the sound in any way???

thanks

John 😎

When we would run the air on Solitude, our R-25, while on Lake Mead or Mohave, I never thought of the sound of the AC as noise. I always thought of it as the sound of nice cool air being circulated around a cabin that would otherwise be 100 plus degrees......

We also have air on Karma. The few times we have used it, it has not bothered nor kept us awake.

One thing you might try if you have done so yet is, once the cabin gets cool raise the temp on the air. This way it will not recirculate as often. We used to set ours on Solitude at 80 degrees. With the air flow directed into the V-Berth, it would be nice and cool in there while a bit warmer in the main cabin.

I had also mounted a couple of 12 volt fans in the V-Berth to assist the AC.

Have the R29 model and have experienced two different sounds with my AC units. The first was because the through hull fittings were "L" shaped and created a very loud sound at start up because it was causing the outflow to spray out 3' as if you had your thumb over the end of a garden hose. Those were replaced with straight fittings and is quieter with a better, more relaxed outflow. The second sounded like crickets and the AC manufacturer told me at the boat show that that noise could be caused by copper tubes rubbing against each other. Got my hands on the unit when it was making the noise and was able to locate and get rid of the sound. Hope this helps....

Remove the panel in the vee berth to access AC compressor unit:

Compressor unit exposed from vee berth:

Place insulation, I used left over pieces from memory foam mattress used to cover cushions.

The AC on the 27 has the compressor unit mounted with only a thin panel no insulation just inches from the head of the person sleeping on the port side of the vee berth. I could not convince Willie to change sides with me, so I had to fix it as shown in my earlier post. I do not believe that the 29 compressor is located so close to the head of the sleepers. Our compressor had a terrific clatter when it first started, then quietened down just a bit after it ran some. Entirely too loud to sleep by.

Well -- I certainly owe you a big ONE.

I thought I had read somewhere where someone had done exactly that -- and I was going to start working in that direction

now I am sure of the direction to work.

Thanks a million.

I see that you know the infamous Pirate from Eastpoint, Fl -- that being Marc....

Marc has my boat this weekend to complete a few upgrades -- so I'll make sure he looks at the pics.

Will u be coming to his gathering later this month ????

Really wish we could, but we are now in Louisiana without the boat. Work and family call. We have appointments in Houston mid month and then hopefully back home and the warm waters of the Laguna Madre for a few months. Just do not see how we could tow another 800 miles one way after the trip we are on now. Yall have fun and we will be thinking about you.

I have some genuine soundproofing we can use there . We will take care of it , John .
Marc

Thanks --- Marc

You and your staff are 100%

I sure am glad you let my wife buy the TUG she wanted !!!!!

John

Just had the compressor unit for the AC replaced. Short trial, but seems to be working great on AC, have not tried reverse cycle heat pump yet. Appears to be considerably quieter. Will still put my insulation back though. We have had the cave and the v berth empty for nearly a month as we waited for the the new unit, then a fitting, then another fitting, then finally the installation. Of course most of the delay was the service man unable to work while were away. He was prompt when we made the boat available.
