My Volvo D-3 200 diesel is history due to a timing belt failure @ only 187 engine hours. Is there any other engine such as Cummins, John Deere, or Yanmar that would fit in the engine compartment? A new Volvo Penta would take 6 months to arrive at this time. The boat is a 2014 and thus out of warranty. Thank you

Sure it cannot be rebuilt?

I can not answer that question without some research but can you give more information about the failure? What caused the belt failure so soon? What damage did the engine have? When did the failure occur running at what rpm? I have heard of belt failures on high hour engines but not low hour. Even though it is out of warranty what is Volvo customer service saying? I would have a lot of questions demanding answers from Volvo. A $20,000.00 + engine should last more than 187 hours or 6 years.

Also, look into "latent defect" coverage on your insufance. Years ago we got a new diesel in our sailboat because of a clogged oil screen that turned our Volvo into an oversized anchor. Good luck.

I am trying to go through insurance even though they said there was little chance for a settlement. It broke down as my broker was bringing it from Anacortes to Skyline to meet me so I could cruise it home to Whidbey Island. Thanks for replying with the Insurance info!

The manual says replace every 1400 hrs/8 yrs. How are you supposed to check it before then?

I agree with the others who said to pursue things, and hard, with Volvo.

Having said that, your question was "what else will fit". You mentioned Deere or Cummins.

I am not aware of a Cummins that will fit. A lot of larger trawlers are using the QSB 6.7 line, which is a marine version of what is used in diesel pickups. Available in different HP's, but pretty much the same engine and dimensions. It has very good stats. Durable. 250 hours between oil changes, or annually, but it doesn't appear that is of any benefit to you, but would for someone who takes more extended trips. You can compare the dimensions but I'm thinking it is just too big. Its heavier, operates at lower RPM's than the Volvo which should help life. The weight and dimensions would be big issues to look at.

I have seen a small Deere used as a Penta alternative. I don't know much about them.

I have also seen a very unusual choice used. The specs and reviews are great, but they just have not done much to promote the brand with distributors. As I recall the dimensions are slightly smaller than Volvo. I'd worry about parts. Its a shame, because it looks like this would be a great choice otherwise. I think a key distributor is in the PNW if my memory is accurate, so maybe the parts thing would be fine for you.

And apparently the Yanmar 4LV might work.

I would urge you to rely more on the counsel of your attorney than on the opinions of the insurer or their representative. Yours is a nightmare scenario for any boat buyer, but your options may be broader than you realize.

If you are up in Whidbey Island I would reach out to La Conner Maritime, (360) 466-3629. They would be the closet Volvo Penta dealer to you and have always been very helpful when we call. I would ask for Mark Crandall if you end up reaching out. He should be able to give you a realistic idea of what needs to happen for repairs.
