This is for information purposes only. I recently was out cruising in my R27 and experienced a 300 RPM decrease in engine RPM and white smoke coming from the exhaust. This was coupled with an increase in engine temperature. I limped back to the marina and asked the mechanic to take a look. He was able to duplicate the issue. Upon investigation he found a pencil size hole with an apparent missing plug. The hole is located on the aft end of the black plastic intake on top of motor..(the end nearest the turbo).
I contact Marc at Wefing Marine and Andrew at Ranger Tug. Neither had heard of this issue before nor was it on any of the Yanmar diagrams. Andrew sent me to Michael Angland (Yanmar Customer Support Rep). He hadn't heard of this issue before either but said he'd investigate. He responded a few days later with the following:
"I have contacted our offices in Europe about this plug. As I had suspected this plug is used to cover a port that is used on the automotive side. There is a third party that takes the BMW automotive engine and marinize's it for Yanmar. My colleagues in Europe have supplied a part number and have set this up. If you still need this plug please contact your local Yanmar dealer or distributor, they can supply information regarding this plug. The part number is 120650-12120. "
Do not know if all Yanmar engines with turbos have this or only a few but it can put a damper on any outing. I have pictures of both the location and solution if anyone is interested. Contact me with your email address and I will forward.
