.. I'm looking at replacing the keel strip this winter. Has anyone done this ? Any information on the profile of the strip and the original attachment process and whether the strip was screwed into the fibreglass or ?? .. I did read on the forum that the newer boats had inserts to accept the screw or bolt.. Thanks for any comment .. Rob

Yes sir. Replaced my keel strip several years ago. It screws directly into the keel line. Make sure the screws are the correct length and do not pierce the hull! Roberts (square) drive is used or what boat builders commonly call a "Hatteras" screw. As with all work, have in writing that work will comply with AYBC accepted methods and installation practices. From and engineering and physics aspect, the square drive is a superior drive for a fastener. Henry Ford turned it down for his Model A, due to cost considerations from the patent holder. Mr. Ford opted instead for the less expensive Phillips drive patent.

.. thanks for the response .. any idea if the strip was a specific pattern ? Rob

Don't recall Rob. I still have 3 or so feet of the original on the boat joined just below the bow eye. It matches perfectly and is merely a butt joint.

Thanks .. I did locate a 12' piece thru RT folks which is coming my way when convenient .. Rob
