In reading Reanne Hemminway-Douglass' article from years ago entitled, "Alaska in 21' Mini-Trawlers?". I'm interested in having fabricated a roll up top that can be deployed on the R21 Classic's boom as configured in the article's numerous pics. If anyone knows of the specs on these tops/covers or addional photos deployed, would be greatly appreciated. Also, anyone knowing the contact info for these three early pioneers of the R21 Classic, I would very much appreciate the contact info. I'm configuring St. Brendan for additional range for a Tennesse River Cruise this summer and subsequent voyages to the Bahamas. Considering the installation of a auxillary saddle tank in the starboard gunwale among other modifications. Thanks, Ga-Midnight Cruise.

I believe this is a recent picture of one or two of those guys, taken last summer at Prevost Harbor on Stuart Island.

Anyway here is a picture of the Original Willie's Tug (Now Hercules) with the type of boom bimini you described.

Walldog, thank you for the pics. The bimini that my R21 Classic came with has an aluminum frame surrounding with the top having zippers around the perimeter to accomodate theframe and battons screwed into to. It's a work of art, but this is a more permanent configuration than I need for a trailerable tug. The previous owner had this configured for a boat at a slip set up. I'm in need of a convertible solution with the battons as depicted in your pics. The leading edge of mine is identical and with your photos and any to follow, should be able to have a canvas maker craft the necessary cover. Anyone in need of a framed cockpit cover for an R21 Classic with frame, I'll have one available soon.

It is very nice to find this thread and the article on the Alaska cruise. I have a classic 21 with the cockpit awning shown, but some previous owner must have changed the battens, because mine are very wide and stiff and no way would they bend to the curve in the photos.

I really like the rolled storage position on the cabin top. I had not thought of that and Ill have to try it next summer.

What do classic 21 owners do about a head? I bought a small porta-potty but there really is no room for it in the cabin. I have wondered about making a side curtain that could hang from the awning top and go all around the cockpit. Has anyone seen something like that?
