Hi Fellow R21 Classic Owners,

The weather is warming up here and I have started to get the boat in shape for the season. I have been working with Richard Becker (parts@rangertugs.com) to get a list together for a general maintenance Yanmar/Ranger R21 parts kit.

I have not completed the task yet, but I thought I would post what we have in case you are starting the process now.

PLEASE NOTE:
MY boat has the 3GM30F, 3 cylinder, 27hp, many I have seen have the 2 cylinder 18 hp 2GM.

Zincs are the same as the new boats;
Shoe Zinc 55154
Rudder Zinc 55152
Prop Zinc 05510

Yanmar Parts;

Alternator belt (runs Alt and Coolant pump) 25132-003700 ($9.90)
Sea Water Pump Belt (runs the sea water pump only) 104511-78780 ($15.00)
Oil Filter 119305-35151 ($8.10)
Air Filter (silencer) 128270-12540 ($19.50)
Fuel Filter 104500-55710 ($5.40)

DANGER Impeller (for Sea Water Pump) Yanmar Part # X08810B ***DANGER***
DANGER Impeller pump Gasket (for Sea Water Pump) 124223-42110 ***DANGER*** see note below

DANGER Note for Impellers: These are the part numbers that work on my particular boat. There are apparently a couple of options here. Not sure if Yanmar changed part numbers or ??? but these work on mine. If you want to have a look, head over to my photo album. There are some photos there which may help. Click on the album with the orange guest electrical switch on it.

Working on small parts list, and will get a pdf together soon.

Hope that helps

Dave

The production of R-21 classic (wood windows?), R-21 (aluminum windows?) spans a lot of years. Do you think it might be simpler to make mechanical parts lists dependent on the engine type rather than the boat model? My '05 has the 3YM30. I think I saw a '93 for sale last year with a Volvo in it (but that may have been a re-power). Were any R-21's built with the electric propulsion system ala Martini?

While we're at it....does anyone know the size of packing needed on the 2005 R-21? has anyone used the "paste" type?

Mr. Jack,
By Engine type, a good idea. I was hoping, in time to include non-engine specific parts as well. I would be happy to do a engine specific parts pick list, maybe we could get a table going for the different models.

Just for clarification, I have been using the term R21 Classic to refer to any pre-21ec model. I had not realized there was actual nomenclature associated with that difference. Often owners of the new boats refer to their R21 (which is accurate of course) when talking about an engine part or whatever. I had hoped that if we started using "Classic" for any non EC boat, it would aid us in searching this site for info that pertains to older models like ours. I was just trying to find a way to say "not a new R21-ec" to the search engine. Example. You happen to be looking for the info on the packing gland. If you search the site now, with r21+cutlass bearing or ??? you get all the new boats which are often different.

I have seen the electric Martini literature, but never have seen an electric production boat, don't know if any Rangers were built that way.

Sorry I don't have any info on the stuffing box, mine was replaced just before I got it, I'm told, and I have NO info on it.

Really like your drawings of the variants!!!

If you post or email me the basic parts for your Yanmar model, I will include them. Might be a good idea to indicate the serial number of your boat too as a reference. Might help us to identify what was installed when if we get enough data points.

Thanks,
Dave

My R21 Classic with the 20 series engine had a NAPA Gold 1344 oil filter installed when we picked it up. I am replacing it today or tomorrow. The 1344 is a larger filter than the stock filter. The previous owner gave me some spares which included a Yanmar filter that is much smaller. I will get the number of it later today and post it. The NAPA 1344 is also a Wix 51344.

Started the oil change project just before a fierce front came through. Our strong South winds shifted to the North with some rain. We had gusts to 45 and the temp is down to 48 here just before daylight, may drop a degree or two more. I was in the boat on the lift and had to move to the cabin to stay dry even though our boat house is on the South side of our home. So this project may resume on Monday instead of this afternoon.

I tried to pump out the oil with a Wal-mart hand pump, but it was worthless. I changed to a drill mounted pump from the auto parts store, it accomplished the task, but could have done better. Does anyone have suggestions for a oil change pump?

I have had good luck with a oil extractor from Harbor Freight dot com. It has a pump on it that you pump up with the hose going down the oil check tube to bottom of the pan. Has maybe a three gal tank. Blue in color and a bit bulky but gets the job done and think the price was like thirty dollars. I did have one modification that I did and I replaced the clear hose with air brake line as the clear stuff liked to implode and take a long time to get the job done.
I appreciate the part number on the raw water pump belt as mine is pretty well worn now and I would like to change it out.
