Hi all,

Given the good discussion on the option of an outboard on the R21. I decided to start a new thread for voting on how to implement:

Question #1:
Outboard in motor well or out the back like the R23?

If you prefer outboard in a motor well reply with "motor well".
If you prefer it hanging out the back , like the R23, reply with "R23ish Mount"

Queston #2:
How fast does it need tto go?

If you prefer the same speed range of the current R21 reply with "R21ish Speed"
If you prefer the get up and go of the R23 reply with "R23ish Speed"

After voting, please provide any comments you think would be beneficial to the discussion.

RESULTS
(Every few days I will tally up the results and post them here)

Question 1:
Motor Well: 5
R23ish: 5

Question 2:
R21ish Speed: 2
R23ish speed: 2

Question !: Motor Well

Question 2: R21ish Speed

Comments:
I would like to see an outboard option that preserved as much of the character of the R21 as possible. Hence my vote for motor well and R21ish Speed. I think this would distinguish it from te R23.

Question 1 : Bracket. I think this might be more practical from a builder standpoint, as the hull differences would be minimal.

Question2: Neither. I think a sweet spot for speed would be somewhere in the middle of where the R-21 is now and the R-23. WOT on the R-23 (with outboard) is about 35 knots. Cruising at 6 - 8 knots (like the current R-21) is fine, but having the ability to go 20 knots WOT, when needed, would also be a selling point to me.

I vote for a Rosborough style floating hull extension to support the motor and improve planing time.

with a little bit of intrepreting the votes, looks we are tied...

.. I'd go for the motor well and R21EC speedish BUT , I would expect to see an honest 10 knts+ cruising speed .. you may be looking at a major hull design change .. wish it was as easy as plumbing in a well .. the open deck, maybe slightly longer cabin and the ability to forgo some of those options ( those overhead skylights, air conditioning etc) might bring a new client base for the boat, that doesn't want to pay for these things .. put your wiring harness in like they do for autos and leave the client some discretion picking his options that they want plugged in ..

Motor well and R21ish speed has pulled into the lead...

Interesting, those that chose motor well seem to also be the ones chosing R21ish speed...I guess that makes sense...they want more traditional tug like qualities.

There would be a couple potential trade offs with an outboard. You would lose the built in cabin heater afforded by the FWC diesel and I suspect the outboard alternators are not as powerful as the diesel. A 9.9hp outboard has around a 6A alternator and a 20hp has around a 12A, surely the diesel's alternator is capable of more but someone who has that info please confirm.

Edit: Looking at a manual on http://www.yanmarmarine.com/ it shows the 3YM30 alternator being a 120A unit so yeah, there would be a significant reduction in charging capacity going OB.
