Hi There!

I just upgraded to a 250hp on my R23. Preliminary results are terrific! But I am still experimenting with it to find the sweet spots. It now holds rpms at nearly every speed and not getting out of the hole is ancient history.

If you too have done this upgrade to your R23, I would love to compare notes with what your experiences have been.

I would appreciate it if you would contact me.

Thanks!

What was involved in the upgrade? Cost? New hydraulics and controls? Etc…

Interested in the specifics also! 🙂

Wondering also if you have a kicker? The aft is a bit heavy with my F200 and kicker... couldn't imagine having another 60-ish pounds hanging back there. But maybe it's not an issue?

Has anyone looked at doing the ECU Flash upgrade on the F200? Nizpro claims an increase of HP to 231, 11.7% increase in torque and 12% better fuel efficeincy.

I repowered my R23 to a 300 hp. The 300 is the same weight as the 250. I, too, was frustrated and concerned with the inability to get out of the hole in big seas and swells. That is no longer the case. I also improved my fuel efficiency as the boat doesn't work as hard. My mechanic says the motor will also last longer because it doesn't work as hard.

My sweet spot for fuel efficiency with a 3-prop blade is around 4200 RPM. On flat seas, my cruising speed is around 30 mph and I regularly get 2.1 mpg and 2.4 to 2.6 mpg with favorable current. With the 200 HP, I had to change to a 4-blade prop to get out of the hole and my fuel efficiency droped to 1.6 mpg. At WOT, I can go over 40 mph, a wee bit too fast for me.

I just got back from two weeks fishing in Neah Bay and out on the ocean. I experienced big swells and having that extra power made me feel much safer than last year out there with just the 200.

Repowering didn't require any cable changes or equipment to the helm as long as you get the same type of motor as what was replaced.

I have a 2018 R23 and need a repower. The sales department is concerned that my insurance policy will be cancelled if I have a 250hp motor on a boat rated for 200hp. Those who have done this, do you have any insight?
Thanks
George

If you do this, you'll need to only fill up the tank with 89 octane fuel. There aren't but 1 or 2 in all of Puget Sound and the San Juan Islands that sell 89 octane. Most are all 87 octane. It's possible to cause engine damage by running too low octane fuel in a Nizpro tuned ECU. Nizpro advertises this clearly. If I could get 89 octane fuel at every fuel dock I'd of already done the tune.

The R23 was rated for 250HP at one point. I remember seeing a sticker on the transom of one saying such.
