Hi Fellow Tugnuters,

Purchased a new Spade S60 (22lbs) for our 2019 R23 and want to replace the anchor roller assembly. Looking to extend the roller assembly by 6"+ to give us more clearance when dropping and retrieving the anchor. One of the problems that I'm running into, is the clearance where the existing mount is located is limited to 2 5/8". Looking for some suggestions on mounting or extending the existing roller assembly.

Thanks
Bruce

Hi Bruce,

I ran into the same problem about how to extend my bow anchor roller for a larger anchor. I first went with a way that extended my existing anchor roller. It worked well until a strong gust of wind hit when I was pulling my anchor up and bent the bow roller sideways. I to would prefer a wider anchor roller but I did not want to make alterations to my fiberglass to accommodate a wider anchor roller. So I went with a longer 14-1/2"x2" bow roller to gain the extra clearance I wanted. I talked to Andrew Custis and he gave me some good advice on how to remove the existing bow roller. If you look in my photo album under Bow Anchor Roller Modifications, you can see some photos and descriptions on both of these modifications.
I hope this is of some help to you.

Thanks for your replies. Both are great options! The Mantus setup looks really solid. I personally would like the tip of the anchor to be a few inches further away from the boat but once again it looks solid! The other option of replacing the bow roller assembly with a new one was puzzling me until I saw the water tight hatch installed.

With the Mantus I can adjust the roller up to ensure the anchor drops free every time.
The good thing about the Mantus setup is it uses the stock roller as part of the mounting, thus eliminating the need to remove same and patch holes. To access the stock roller bolts requires a 3-4" hole be drilled inside the anchor locker.

I'm sold on your idea SgtAlf! Was looking at a few websites of distributors in Canada and the BR1 has a differnt profile and length. Might have to order it straight from Mantus to make sure I'm getting the correct or newer version of the BR1. Question for you; How thick is the wood on top (3/4"or 1") and your stainless plate inside the locker (1/8)? I'm looking at Starboard to replace the wood and the same inside the locker.

I had a custom cut piece of teak lumber to put under the Mantus. I just looked to see if I saved the place I ordered it from, I guess I didn't save it. Right now there's 10" of snow on the boat, I'll have to clear it off to measure the teak. I don't remember what I used for a backing plate, I think I used aluminum. I'll have to get back to you.

You do nice work!

We recognized that our solution had to involve the existing factory RT roller. There is no way to access the fasteners without cutting an access hole in the anchor locker. We were tempted to do that (inaccessible areas on boats...seriously!?) until we came across the Mantus Bow Rollers.

The beauty of the Mantus bow rollers is that they have a flange with a slot to accommodate their Anchor Mate system, below the base of the unit (see diagram below). We merely used this flange as a bracket to thru-bolt to the RT roller. We did drill two holes in the RT roller that lined up with the flange slot for proper positioning on top of the RT roller. We drilled the holes with the RT roller in place (advantages of being a trailer boater!) using a centering drill bit to establish the hole and then a step drill bit to get the size we needed (1/2")

Once we determined the positioning of the Mantus on top of the RT, we took measurements for the teak plank. On our boat it was a 1-1/2" height. We chose 4" wide by 17" long to provide the best surface for mounting the Mantus Bow Roller and for the anchor chain to run. Mounting the plank was a simple process since full access is available in the anchor locker.

We removed the RT Bow Roller's bail and roller. We drilled out the holes for the bail (forward holes) and thru bolted using the "axle tube" of the original roller. In addition, we put a bolt through the holes for the roller (aft holes) for additional rigidity.

The Mantus bow roller comes with the mounting holes pre-drilled; problem is that the forward two holes are unusable (too far forward) so we drilled two new holes about 2-1/4" further aft to align for thru-bolting to the anchor locker below.

Once fully mounted, we believe this provides a surprisingly strong fitment: we retained all the strength of the original system while adding the independent robust mounting of the Mantus system. The new roller is almost 4" forward of where the old roller was giving a lot more room for bigger anchors. Additionally, we were able to use the Mantus Anchor Mate to secure the Mantus M1 13# anchor firmly when housed.
