Any estimates on getting bottom paint done?

New bottom, Annapolis MD area, Pocket Yachts is literally across the street from me.

Thanks in advance

On my RT-27OB I have had bottom paint estimates range from $1100 to $5500. Depends on quality of prep work, paint used and how many coats. The $5500 quote was from a yard that does mostly commercial boats using top quality paints. Sand hull with 80 grit sandpaper, 3 coats of barrier paint, 2 coats of bottom paint and said would be effective for 4-5 years in our Maine waters before needing to be redone. The $1100 quote was from my dealer and he was not specific what he would do. Another yard was $2900 for sand hull with 80 grit, 1 coat of barrier paint and 2 coats of bottom paint. They used a cheaper bottom paint and said it would need to be redone in 2-3 years.

We had new bottom paint done this past summer. Cost was just under $2200.

Let me know if you want a copy of the invoice and I can email to you (for details of paint, hours worked, etc).

Cheers.

Thanks for the replies, was told approximately 7K which I thought was high.

To be clear, our 2200 was for bottom paint only. We had out hull painted also and that ran $6K.

Pocket yachts is where I got my new 27 in August. They did the bottom paint too and used the product I wanted. They did a wax and 20 hour service and some other stuff at the same time. Don’t remember the costs, but Tony and Kelsey were great to deal with.

A friend of mine received a quote from Pocket for 3300, new boat so I assume 80 grit sanding and prep work, Don't know how many coats applied.

Thanks for everyone's responses

Hi Craig, this is Tony from Pocket Yacht Company. Our price is $3075 for new boat bottom paint application. That includes the application of Pettit Protect Epoxy Primer, and two coats of any Pettit Bottom Paint product you prefer (our house paint is Hydrocoat ECO). BTW, our service dept. is closed till January 4th, so we won't be answering phones till then, but if you'd like to arrange the work, you can send an email to service@pocket-yacht.com and we can get you scheduled once we're back in the office.

This is an open question. There is a difference between a bottom paint and a new bottom paint. There is a difference between the labor rates in one part of the country and another. There is also a big difference between what one dealership or boat yard includes in the application. The answer is what type of bottom job are you looking for?

Prices are average 23' boat
Good bottom job new bottom. 100.00 ft- 8.5 ft beam includes labor materials and supplies. (Labor) De-waxing the hull, cut (sand) the gelcoat finish in all area's to be bottom painted, De-waxing after sanding, 1 coat of a premium Muti-season bottom paint $2300.00 .If two coats are desired add an additional $12 a ft - $112.00 a ft. $2576.00. Use this as an average cost labor shop rate $130.00 at a reputable shop.

Better bottom job new bottom $127.00 ft- 8.5 ft beam includes labor materials and supplies. (Labor) De-waxing the hull, Cut the gel finish in all area's to be bottom painted, de-waxing after sanding, 1 coat of epoxy barrier coat ( proves a better adhesion of bottom paint to hull) 2 coats of premium Multi-Season bottom paint. $2921.00 Use this as an average cost labor shop rate $130.00 at a reputable shop.

Best bottom job new bottom $157.00 ft 8.5 ft beam includes labor materials and supplies. (Labor) De-waxing the hull, Cut the gel finish in all area's to be bottom painted, de-waxing after sanding, 3 coats of epoxy barrier coat ( proves a better adhesion of bottom paint to hull and protection from water absorption) 2 coats of premium Multi-Season bottom paint. $3611.00 Use this as an average cost labor shop rate $130.00 at a reputable shop.

When applying the epoxy barrier coat there is a time window for the next application. This also applies to the first coat of bottom paint applied over the barrier coat. This time window issues a chemical bond between coats. If this time window can not be met it would require and addition sanding of the bottom to insure a good bond. Many dealerships and yards figure this cost in. This will increase the cost to $240.00 ft $5520.00

The most important component of shopping for a bottom job is know what is included in the estimate. compare apples to apples. Some shops spray the paint. This cost more but gives a better finish.

I did the bottom job myself. I had estimates low $1800.00 high $5000.00 . What was included in the estimates were not apples to apples. I did what was included in the (Best bottom job new bottom) It took me 2.5 days approximately 20 hrs, to wipe the hull sand it and wipe it for the first barrier coat application. I did also prep all the below the water line metals for paint. There are many area's that are more labor intensive to sand properly (tedious sanding). It took me approximately 2 hours per coat ( 5 coats) 10 hrs. Cost of materials $700.00 paints and supplies. If I was paying myself 130.00 Hr = $3900.00. I did this application in September 2016 and recoated in May 2020. I could have gotten 1 more year out of it but we planned a trip to Florida this year and then continue cruising for the next couple years. I did not want to paint the bottom while doing this.

This may give you a better idea of the cost. 7K seems high. Check what labor rates are in the area.

You will almost always save money buying the paint yourself from Defender or elsewhere and then having it applied by a good yard, especially since then you get to pick exactly which product you get (an added bonus).

If you aren't scraping down to the hull, knowing what paint was put on previously is very important.
