No problem going up but trips the breaker when trying to go down, might it need lubricated? Had the boat for 4 years and haven't done any maintenance :?

Does it sound like it is laboring when going down? A breaker will blow when the amperage is exceeded. If a motor is under strain it will draw more amperage. It seems odd that when going down it would blow. Going down it would have relatively little load. I can't figure out why it would blow in one direction and not the other without there being an increased load or perhaps a short in the circuit when in reverse. Lewmar may be able to shed some light on the situation. Your windless I believe has a three year warranty and Lewmar is very good with replacements. I would give them a call.

I'd also check to make sure there is nothing tangled in the locker while deploying the chain and rode.

Thanks Mike... Yes, it is straining going down, but not up, weird, right? It does make a kind of squeaking noise when trying to go down. The rode is unobstructed in the locker. I'm going to try adjusting the tension on the clutch today to see what difference that makes if any.

Will the windlass run without a load in both directions? A good cleaning and lubrication is always a good start.

Yep, thanks Karl, I'm going to try that today.

Took it apart, pulled the gear out, cleaned and re-greased. Works as it should now 🙂

That’s fantastic! Thanks for the update.
