Still recovering the final traces of my $2000+ oil change - 5 weeks and the finish is in sight.

While checking the engine after the most recent mechanic I found a dangling hose coming out of the "wastegate" control valve located just forward of the air cleaner on top of the engine.

Loose hoses scare me, especially when it was clear from the hose that it went someplace and did something.

I looked around, took photos of the places I couldn't see, and found a corresponding "hole" in the air cleaner mounting flange. Finished neatly and the same size as the hose. I stuck the hose in the hole.

Nothing was broken when the hose was disconnected, nothing improved when I put the hose in the hole. It looks like a "dash pot" breather on an old Ford - maybe Yanmar installed it to be sentimental?

What does it do - or what should it do? And where does it go?

Thanks - not urgent, but puzzled.

Please look in the Gallery search for wastegate - the photo is there, but I can't figure out how to post it here.??, I click on g2Img, the wheel of death spins for a while, then blank.

Interesting that you did not have issues with this hose disconnected. I had the same issue with mine. It kept falling off the waste gate end. I finally found a small enough screw clamp and tightened it considerably. It has not fallen off since. The problem you should have had when it was off was when you went full throttle. You would have gotten an alarm. The alarm was because you were not developing enough pressure from the turbo. Perhaps during your service it slipped off and you never increased your RPM's enough for the issue to be noticed. Keep an eye on it and if you find a small enough screw clamp, I would suggest removing the crimp clamp and replacing it.

Thank you. The waste gate end is well attached. The other end was dangeling in space. Where does it go?... I stuck it in a free hole in the air cleaner, but doubt that is what it should do.

Bruce: thank you.
