R25SC Anchor

Hi Andrew or Kenny,

I would like to move up one size in anchor on our 2014 R25SC, but the 10kg (22lb) anchor recommends using 5/16" chain instead of the 1/4" on the stock anchor. My question is will the windlass accommodate 5/16" chain or can I use 1/4" chain on the bigger anchor in spite of the Lewmar recommendation?

Hello Mike,

As long as the anchor package was purchased through the factory you should have 5/16th chain equipped on your boat already. The R-21 is the only boat that uses 1/4" chain.

Hi Kenny,

Yes, the anchor package is the factory one. I was working off the manual and wasn't sure which model of windlass was on the boat (it's in storage). So I can safely move up to the bigger anchor using the same rode and keep the 16.5 lb one as a backup.

I did this on my R25sc and the only issue is the length of the new heavier anchor, assuming you just bought a larger anchor of the same type. When pulling the anchor it is much more "possible" to have the anchor hit the bow of the boat than the smaller size. You just need to be a little more cautious when pulling anchor and storing it, other than that it seems to work fine.

The anchor chain on my new (for me) R25 looks like 5/16 - and it won't self stack in the locker when recovering the anchor from the cockpit. I plan on replacing the chain with 1/4" ht, more than enough in my limited experience to keep her in place everywhere I anchor. Must I also replace the wildcat? It looks like a 1/4" wildcat but, best I can tell, is unmarked.

You better make sure your windless can work properly with the 1/4 inch chain before you change it out.

I had a lighter chain on my boat for the first 3 years. I had to have the windlass rebuilt and the gypsy replaced as the wrong sized chain ate away at it. There are different gypsy's for different chain sizes. Contact a dealer in your area to get the right one.
