When I turned the battery selector knob to "Engine", it energized the Volvo monitoring panel at the helm as normal; however, it immediately beeped and gave me the error code, "Power Module Failure: engine may not start or stop". I hit the start button and it did start and ran roughly, then the front of the engine gave out a screeching sound. I immediately shut down the engine. Now when I turn the battery selector back to the engine battery, I don't get an error code at the panel. Given the sound I heard I'm reluctant to start it up, and to instead take it to a Volvo mechanic to run diagnostics.

Is this a common problem and are there any suggested approaches going forward? I'm lucky this happened in my driveway.

It sounds like the boat was not in the water? If you did not have water to the engine raw water intake when you started the engine the screeching sound was probably the raw water pump impeller yelling for water. The impeller will probably need replacing.

I have found that if I forget to turn off the ignition before I turn off the engine battery switch on my Volvo, when I turn the battery switch back on I would sometimes get an erroneous error message. I believe the proper way to turn off the engine is to press the start/stop button, then either lock the ignition with the fob or press the ignition button. I hope that is your problem.

Thanks for the input. I always put a hose into the strainer housing before starting the engine on land, so I'm pretty sure I didn't forget that step. That's a good thing to look into though...
I often forget to turn off the ignition with the fob after shutting the engine down with the stop button. So it's good to know you got false error messages sometimes when doing that.
