R27ob - Raw water washdown pump Rusting

Is it just me, or is this common ? The end bell (part facing you when you look at the pump in the locker) is totally rusted. Common? Harmless until it has a hole in it ? Looks like a real joy to get the pump out of there and do a yeomans job of refinishing the rusted part.

The raw water wash down pump is next to the engine battery. Once the engine battery is removed, which is fairly easy, access isn’t too bad to the pump.
